We only lost by more than 3 I think 2 or 3 times under Rafa.

I always felt we were in the game.. The 3-2 vs Everton was nice.

We defended very well and had a sting in our tail.

At the end of the day, for me a defeat is a defeat. If you're 1-0 down and you take off your attackers, sit back and invite pressure for the remaining 78mins, thats absolutely unacceptable. We did that quite a few times under Rafa, its not sport then.

There's a middle ground between Rafa Benitez cold and calculationed and Steve Bruce magic sponge hope for the best.

Its called a normal ****ing manager.

Depends I saw him change a full back and us turn a game around.

Sometimes you've got to address other areas to actually get the chances in the 1st place.

I liked the side rafa left.. Rondon Perez and Almiron clicked and they were a very effective counter attacking side that was hard to score past.

I think Bruce deserved some credit for that form and keeping the club up for 3 seasons, but it's football and he's going to home if he doesn't get something in the next 3 to 6 games max.


I'm not a Bruce fan I just don't want another idiot like Wilder and I'm pretty sure he'll be the one tbh.

I'd take Howe over wilder that's for sure, but again I want better.

Really respected Ritchie for that. He knew full well the fans didn't like Bruce and that would have been an easy axe for him to grind. Despite being in the wrong, he could easily have had the fans onside in any ensuing argument because the fans just want to get at Bruce. As you say the sign of a man and integrity, when you are wrong just front up and move on. I can think of a few who could take his lead...

Bruce is just gash. His record tells you he is gash. I like to give every man a chance regardless of history but I knew he wasn't going to ever be good enough. I still gave him a chance but it was clear within a month it was the same old Steve Bruce. I'm sick of watching 1990's football at this club. We haven't had an up to date manager under Ashley. Rafa in terms of understanding how a club should be set up tried to get some things in place. However his football is the same as it was at Valencia. He is unique in his approach which is why he's so hard to follow. The one thing you can say about Rafa is he had a style, it was very defensive and **** to watch, but he at least has an identity. The likes of Pardew and Bruce are just still sound the battle cry "go on lads" type of managers. If you buy good players, they will always take you so far with that. Both to their credit managed to do that - Wilson, ASM, HBA, Ba, Cabaye etc will always bring joy, because they are proper footballers and good footballers don't necessarily need instruction all the time. I just want a manager who plays modern pressing football, with an attacking/entertaining outlook. I think Jones has been a step forward, and I honestly think getting his mate Potter in is the way to go. Particularly with our budgets.

What on Earth are you whinging about? By CC’s logic Bruce and Co have almost given you what you want eg a manager therefore you should have nothing to complain about.

I agree with a lot of that essay, especially the 2nd last paragraph. But he was backed in the Championship to get us out of it. He might have went a bit OTT with squad depth but it got us up which was the aim

He went way over the top. He could have just used some of what was there and spent more when going up. He should have used Armstrong, Toney, Merino, Mbabu, Mbemba more. All of them wanted to play here. Merino was the worst handling of a player I've seen in yonks. Nothing said from fans bar "ah he didn't want to be here". No he thought why the **** am I watching Mo Diame. Look at our central midfield now. We should have built a team round that lad, probably could have made Longstaff look good. Captain Lascelles instead of Mbemba? Yedlin instead of Mbabu? **** that. I thought he made some shocking decisions transfer wise and then tried to pin it all on Ashley.

Plus he is whingey ****er who is always agitating with owners. He falls out with people everywhere he goes. Everyone knew that doesn't work with Ashley (or owners generally). He then dupes fans as a man of the people. Our fans bought his bullshit too, like his project in China

Rafa was just not for me at all, boring, bitchy, useless on the market and completely anti-football. He also attempted to wage a civil war knowing full well he would lose and leave the club. It was obvious.

Bruce is also boring, bitchy, useless on the training ground and completely anti-football. He's attempted to wage a civil war against the fans with the media, but will probably be sacked for results.

I want someone young and enthusiastic to be at the club, Howe or Bowyer.

You can extend it to Ashley's entire reign really. He has done **** all for us as fans manager wise. I'll accept we had some good times under Pardew, but it was built on french sand and short lived.

The end of the Pardew manager era was coincided with the absolute disaster upstairs following Llambias leaving. As much as Llambias was a useless ****, he was still in a very important role and when he left we clearly had no idea who to hire.

So, we let Pardew leave, didn't replace him and left Carver in for far, far too long and then Charnley burst in with a ****ing disaster appointment, McClaren. It completely wasted about 5 years of development under both Hughton and Pardew. Left us back at square one.

The rebuild Rafa did was basically just an attempt to copy what Hughton did, but he spent far more money on **** players.

I think we were lucky to be bopping around top 10 at the time and if its one thing I can say for Rafa, despite the football, we did get back to that position and were very difficult to beat. Saying that, I did think we would be relegated in Rafas final season, but he walked before my theory could be proven correct.

But in terms of assistance at board level to plan for the future, develop the academy, ensure the facilities are up to scratch, he'd probably be pissing in the wind. This is what pisses me off, there are managers out there, like Potter and tbh I see Bowyer has the same capabilities, they could come in do a job on the budget required and we could play some OK football. Certainly win more than 1 game in 4. But we go for not even the easier options, we go for managers who have failed repeatedly at clubs, or play utter dirge with no results.
