With all the lies, spin and misinformation emanating from Charles Green with regards to his vision of the Masquerangers it would be all too easy to dismiss his outlandish proclamations as the smooth talking sales pitch of a dodgy car salesman. When allied to the apparent seamless continuation of the 'succulent lamb' culture amongst the Scottish Hacks and a laughably pliable support base we are left with a heady stench of gullibility masked with unashamedly brass necked Yorkshire bullshit.
Today Charles Green pledged his own future to his new club until they are 'back' amongst the Elite of Europe. A lofty ambition for a fourth tier team whose very existence could be threatened as BDO charged with liquidatiing Rangers Football Club examine the suspicious circumstances by which Green's consortium attained the assets of the now defunct Glasgow Club. So, a desperate sound-bite or a genuine belief that this ambition could be realised? Lets examine some of the obstacles to Green attaining his ambition.
1) They are in the fourth tier of Scottish Football- This means a commitment of at least five years. From next season Scotland will be providing only one entrant to the Champions League.
2) Charles Green is attempting to float his club on the AIM exchange. We have been told that some of the money raised will be put towards funding the playing squad. The amount they seek to raise via this share issue is £20m. When David Murray asked the Ibrox 'faithful' to invest in their club he only succeeded in raising a little over £1m. This was at a time of plenty. The light blue hoards recent history for supporting their clubs is hopeless..
3) Charles Green suggested that his club would never ply their trade in the SPL. Given that Champions League entry is predicated on a teams finishing position in the SPL it is patently impossible for this new club to gain entry into the Champions League Unless...
We have heard utterances from the supporters of this new club that there may not be an SPL by the time the Sevco Franchise reach the top division. Until today I had taken this to mean that the financial impact of the loss of Rangers would be so devastating to the SPL that several other clubs might cease to exist. I have no doubt that this was also the thought process of those that made this hopeful premonition. Now things have changed a little. Green wants his team in the Champions League. He told us that he wouldn't go to the SPL because he wouldn't go where they were not wanted. The reality of the situation is that the economic imperative to keep the rump of "Rangers" alive was the motivation of the SFL and SFA to accept "Rangers" into its ranks. The obvious contradiction of a club simultaneously being passed into liquidation and applying transfer membership from Rangers to...Rangers could be overlooked in order to placate the aforementioned gullible fan base into the absurd notion that history could be transferred from one club to another. For the SPL however, there was no such impediment. Nimmo Smith, Nicholas Stewart QC and Charles Flint QC were on the SPL committee who debated, not the obvious notion that Rangers ceased to be a football club, rather the date on which they ceased to be a football club.
How therefore could "Rangers" participate anywhere other than the SFL when promotion to the SPL would necessitate losing their spurious claim to continuity from Rangers? Well, the answer may lie in this fabled idea of League reconstruction. I think most folk accept the idea that 3 bodies controlling the affairs of football in a country the size of Scotland is somewhat excessive. Most would also accept that league reconstruction is imperative for the development of the Scottish game. The SFA have already shown they are willing to bend the rules to accommodate new Rangers. They have made 'friends' in the SFL. Something is standing in the way of Charles Green and his dream of competing with the elite teams in Europe for the very first time. Something has to give... That thing is the SPL.
