But going backwards and not making any evident attempt to correct it will generally not endear one's self to the support. Therein lies the issue here: the club hasn't acted as if being 17th rather than 7th was much of a difference in their eyes, so long as the accounts remained healthy.
How on earth (!) can getting relegated be good for the accounts?
"Remaining Healthy" is surely staying in the Prem; bigger crowds & club merchandise, TV revenues (fixed & selected matchday coverage) to name but a few.

17th keeps you in the PL. what Schad is implying is the board don’t care where we finish as long as it is not relegation.

I think the lack of enthusiasm for the team especially from the Northam End surely reflects the type of football we have been playing for the last two seasons?

Partly. But it slso reflects poorly on the supporters themselves. Take yesterday; the only sound from the Northam in the second half was to chant Gabbiadini's name while he was on the bench. So when Gabbi came on, you'd expect them to increase the volume, but nope; they went completely silent, like the only reason for singing his name in the first place was to have a dig at the manager for not starting him - and once he was on they reverted to whining at Redmond.

The point he's making is he feels the board are just trying to stay in the PL at minimal outlay, also called the Mike Ashley approach.

Edit - magic beat me to it.

To be honest I get fed up with crap the board are putting out. All this rhetoric about five year plans and European football is a load of crap. We are not losing good solid managers for nothing it has to be about ambition and trying to do things on the cheap. Trouble is we have extremely short in experience owners. Who to me give the impression that buying a club like Southampton will just bring in the money with little or no further input.

I never paid any attention to all that - I suspect that those of us who were sceptical about those claims in the first place are a bit more sanguine about our current position than those who genuinely believed we were on course to become the English Atletico Madrid.

Mind you, while I didn't expect Champions League in 5 years, I didn't expect a relegation battle this season either. If we survive it, it might pull us all down to earth a bit I suppose.

Realism is in short supply it seems. Dreams and nightmares eh.

Yeah it's kind of bizarre how many people bought into that tbh <laugh>

I'm sure they care a bit. But given the choice between profit and league position, I have little doubt which one they favour.

On the atmosphere point, this is from a Leicester forum which backs up the point I've made before:

"Why is it our Atmosphere has become non existent this Season and majority of last Season? Do we expect to turn up and just roll over teams all of a sudden?

We went from having probably the best atmosphere in the Country to one of the worst now."

Even in Milan I didn't quite believe I was there.
So true.......
And did you feel the same way about reaching Wembley just over 12 short months ago? Am still convinced that being 'robbed' by the limo knocked thdvstuffing out of the team then......... and their end of season (poor) run, in part, was a case of "cause & effect"

That's still an exceptionally dubious proposition. We had 30 points in 25 matches when we played the League Cup final. From that point forward, we managed 16 points in 13 matches. Our points haul was effectively the same...slightly higher, actually.

I put March to April down to an end of season malaise possibly brought on by that disappointment. And that malaise may have extended into this season - in the end though, you can't keep selling your best players every summer, and not end up paying a high price.
