Having failed to agree personal terms with both Enoch Showomni & Matthew Barnes-Homer, Chesterfield chief John Sheridan has turned his attention to Chris Iwelumo of Watford. Jack Lester could be a makeweight in the deal

I would have taken Jack Lester 10 years ago - great record as a striker - but too long in the tooth now.

Showumni & Barnes-Homer are obviously deluded as to how much they're worth - anyone spot as to why this might be?

I'd just as soon get back to Watford rumours. But on the Bedfordshite point, Barnes-Homer is someone they got rid of despite him being top scorer last season. The fact that he couldn't agree terms with an established League One side says something about the amount of money LooTown are spending on failing to get out of the Conference (and the fact that they're spending that sort of money even after radical cost-cutting might explain how they ended up there in the first place).

This isn't a rumour as such, but I've just been mulling over the lengths of current player's contracts. The only important player who could potentially walk for nothing is Martin Taylor, who we got on a free anyway. A far cry from the days of having to sell Priskin, Smith and McAnuff in the last year of their contracts and losing DeMerit, Hoskins, Harley and Lee on frees that summer (yet infuriatingly not Ellington or Sadler). Whatever you think of the individuals, all of those were first team regulars at one point or another, and I'm glad to see we're not in that situation again.

Did they not manage to play Cup replays on the following Tuesday or Wednesday once upon a time? What has changed?

This is only a rumour, no by no means definite! Could just be some stirring. So afr they have announced 2 of the TV games - Liverpool/Man Utd (pretty much a given) and the Sunderland-M'Boro game. There's 3 more lined up for TV....

I guess they have to discuss with clubs if it is feasible, and also wait on replays in case there is a tasty tie. i expect the QPR/Chelsea one will be if QPR win the replay!

In those days the police were given time and a half and another day off in lieu if there leave was cancelled in less that 8 days. If more than 8 days then they only got time & half. All Policing of grounds in those days was done on Police overtime. It became very expensive in the late 70's early 80's due to the violence and extra police to be employed. It was thus that the Government decided the police needed at least 9 days to ensure a Football fixture could be properly policed. Hence the change from 3-4 days to 10-11 days.

Hope that helps a little.

A few rumours going round the Spurs game is going to be on the Friday, at 7.45pm.... As yet, no confirmation though!

I hope not...5.20 is bad enough. I know there's money from TV but it's small consolation to those of us who travel a long way to get to games. How long before it's 3 o'clock in the morning kick offs to provide TV fodder for soccer-loving insomniacs?
