Considering that the club have basically confirmed that we are looking to bring in another 3-5 players this transfer market, how much do we think is left on the transfer kitty to bring these players in. Considering that we are looking at quality over quantity, they aren’t going to be cheap. At least there must be £10m, but we are supposedly looking to spend that on Billing so there must be more funds than that available, so maybe £20m??

Or maybe we're looking at a sale or 2 to generate the funds.
 
I think the available budget this summer has been estimated at around £30m, with Gibson and Giannoulis not counting towards that figure. We've probably spent a little over half of that on Rashica, Gunn and Lees-Melou. Maybe £10-13m in the pot?

3-5 players needed, although there's still room in the squad for 3 loanees (1 more domestic) I think. I wouldn't be surprised to see Giannoulis/Quintilla/Gibson/Amadou type deals where we loan with an option to buy.

It is a slow market, but there are a lot of clubs around Europe who really need to sell, and not that many buyers. If things stay slow, and a failure to sell becomes an existential threat to some clubs, prices will have to come down.

In a normal window, we'd want our business done early because prices ramp up as unprepared clubs have to splash the cash at the end of the window. Perhaps this year it will be the opposite, and if we can go into the last week of the window with a list of targets at financially-precarious clubs, maybe there's bargains to be found. It's a high risk, high reward strategy.

At the top end, Buendia is the 5th more expensive player in the world this window. There's just not a lot going on. It's also not that surprising that clubs with few saleable assets (I'm thinking Ajer) are demanding big fees.

To try and complete our spending with rumours:

£5m on Carter-Vickers (although a loan CB has been suggested by Pinkun)
£5m on Spence (seems expensive given what we paid for Giannoulis/Mumba)
Loan to buy midfielder
Premier League loan attacker (Delap from Man City)

That's the downside of our political correctness I suppose. A moral win but a financial loss.

Also, would Spence, Byram and Mumba be sufficient to replace Aarons if he leaves, as well as covering any Giannoulis absences? There would be money for further players though

Aarons leaving completely changes the dynamic. For now we're buying backup, if Aarons goes we're also buying a starter who we think can slot in seamlessly.

I had heard the £30m figure as well but I wasn’t sure whether that was before or after the Buendia sale, that had me thinking that we possible had £60m to spend. We’ve spent about £30m so far on the incomings, including Gibson and Gianoulis
 
We had a £15m budget to begin with. Gibson and Giannoulis came out of last year's budget. The budget went up to £30m after the Beundia deal and Gunn, Rashica, Gilmour and Lees-Melou all came out of that, which left around £14m in the budget before the £3m loss on the BK 8 fiasco, so about £10-11m left as of now.

Trying to find some bargains...

Jonathan Panzo - 20 year old, English, 6ft1 left-sided CB for Dijon, who were relegated from Ligue 1 last season. 91% Pass completion last season with a high pass volume, and comfortable on the ball. One year on his contract, wants to make it to the Premier League. May not quite be at the level of Gibson, Hanley, etc, but I don't think he'd cost much more than £3m due to Dijon's finances, and he seems well suited to Farkeball.

Zinedine Ferhat - 28 year old attacking midfielder (left or right) for relegated Nimes, 6 goals 10 assists last season in Ligue 1. Whoscored says he's very strong in Aeriel Duels, key passes and through balls. Algerian international so should get a work permit? A move to Strasbourg recently fell through. Nimes apparently want £3.4m.

Moussa Kone - 24 year old Senegalese striker for relegated Nimes, scored 9 in 33 in Ligue 1 last season. Previously played in Germany. Currently AWOL to try and force a transfer, so clearly an attitude issue, but would probably be a very cheap, pacy striker.

I wonder if a loan move for Maitland-Niles from Arsenal might make sense? Went to WBA last season, so not a lot of progression for him, but he can cover midfield and full-back.

Daniel Amartey from Leicester is similar, can play DM and full back, and is a down the pecking order where he is.

Edit:- One report has him as striker, another as wide man. 16 goals and 10 assists in 46 matches last season, eight full caps ,PAOK player of the season.

News from Germany has the fee for Rashica at £8m, rising to a possible £11m.

Just checked Tzolis on Wiki and he is listed as winger. So 16 in 46 is a very good return for a 19 year old.

No, I am not saying that. I'm saying that the particular formation a team plays is irrelevant to whether that team needs or doesn't need (would or would not benefit from having) a specialist DM. You were arguing that those of us who think a specialist DM is essential are somehow failing to appreciate the adaptability of the 4:2:3:1 formation; Rob was suggesting that any need for a specialist DM would be obviated if we shift to a back 3 rather than a back 4. Neither is correct -- as DH also points out in his excellent post.

Not strange at all, given that I'm making that exact point, i.e. some teams playing formation X benefit from having a specialist DM, some teams playing that same formation don't. Whether a team does or doesn't benefit is not a function of the formation played.

It's not a question of playing "the Robbie BB way"; it's a question of playing the most successful way, getting the best results. Nor is it true that "our tremendous success of recent years has come from playing a different way". As DH has pointed out, every attempt to do without Tettey has ended in his speedy re-introduction. The only instance of Tettey's dispensability is last season, with the arrival of -- wait for it -- an even better DM in the shape of Ollie Skipp. The evidence is that, playing 4:2:3:1 with DF at the helm, we do better with a DM in the side. Those of us on here (and I'm not alone) who want to see us sign a specialist DM, are simply basing our opinion on the evidence of past seasons.

Of course, there's the further question as to WHY the evidence stacks up in favour of our including a specialist DM, and against our trying to do without one. Is it because we haven't (and, given the business model, can't realistically hope to have) the players to make "playing a different way" more of a success? Or does it reflect a structural weakness inherent in how the team is coached to play, a weakness which can most easily be compensated for by deploying a specialist DM? My opinion has always been that it is a combination of both. I like DH's comparing having a specialist DM to an insurance policy; but whereas he suggests the cover may not be needed all the time, IMO that's exactly what we do need.

I think Panzo would be an interesting signing, he played for the England Youth teams but seems to have dropped out of favour recently.

This would be a great signing if we can get him
 
If, big if maybe, we are after him I would rather it had not been leaked. Just seen his goals from last season, impressive. Has a buzz about him. Plays LW but moves about a bit.
 
That article about Tzolis by the Pinkun is begging for a club correction within hours. The club have been very hot on shutting down inaccurate rumours this summer. If the headline is unchanged by the end of the day I'll start to think there's something in it.

The link makes sense though. Club we've dealt with before, and Giannoulis adapted to English football very well. Problem area in the squad, fairly expensive but with huge sell-on potential.
