Just announced Gordon Banks, England's greatest goalkeeper has passed away. RIP..

A true great, and without a doubt the best in the world in his time. Just heard Pele on the wireless (recorded some time ago), talking about Banks's save from him in the 1970 World Cup QF - 'I scored over 1,000 goals in my life, but all anyone wants to talk about is that one I didn't score'.

RIP.

The phrase Legend is banded about far to easily these days but in the case of Gordon Banks it is truly deserved.....

Funnily enough he never seemed to have a great game against us at HQ he was in gaol for Leicester when we put 4 past them in the League Cup Quarter Final in 67 and again for Stoke when we beat them in the last game of the season in our first venture into top flight football when we only won 4 games all season....

Certainly one of the old school gents of the game, everyone remembers the save from Pele but equally outstanding was his penalty save from Geoff Hurst for Stoke in the League Cup Semi Final against West Ham when they went on to win the cup....

RIP a true gentleman....

A beautiful tribute to Gordon Banks from Pele............

I scored so many goals in my life, but many people, when they meet me, always ask me about that save. While it was indeed phenomenal, my memory of Gordon is not defined by that - it is defined by his friendship. He was a kind and warm man who gave so much to people

So I am glad he saved my header - because that act was the start of a friendship between us that I will always treasure. Whenever we met, it was always like we had never been apart.

I have great sadness in my heart today and I send condolences to the family he was so proud of.

Rest in peace, my friend. Yes, you were a goalkeeper with magic. But you were also so much more. You were a fine human being.

Sadly Pele has not been in the best of health in the last few years, I see all these great stars of the 60s and 70s passing away and our great memories with them. That was a lovely tribute and typical of players of that generation who were so much more humble...

Agree with you Tramore ... the term legend is used far too often.

However in the context of Gordon Banks it could never be more fitting. Not the tallest of keepers but a giant in our game and in our history. I am so proud to have been fortunate enough to say I got to see him play when I was a young boy.

RIP Gordon, you will be a massive loss to your family, to your friends and to your nation.
