Sad news - bought those first two albums when they first came out, such a different sound for a British band at the time, mixing ska with reggae, with very resonant lyrics RIP Brian
Just seen that, he had been ill for a while but still a shock. You tend to think they'll go on for ever. RIP...
Top man, and a big cricket fan. A mate and I were hanging around with a beer outside the Tavern after a Lord's Test as Charlie came out, and my pal called out to him. 'Alright Charlie?' 'Alright lads' 'Where's Mick today?' my mate went on, awkwardly. I raised my eyes in a 'what kind of question is that?' expression, and Charlie fixed me with a sort of resigned look before replying to my pal, 'He's in the South of France'. 'I told him, didn't I?' he said to me as he walked off. RIP.
RIP Charlie - Very sad to hear that one of the Stones has died. And I agree - you do think they'll go on forever My daughter met him when she was working as a shop girl - the store owner was a friend and introduced them to each other.
To be fair….with the amount of drugs and booze he had consumed over the years, I’m surprised he lived to 80. Good on him. Just a shame the band became a bit **** in the later years as their early stuff was great.
RIP Sean Lock Brian Travers Don Everly and Charlie Watts Your humour, comedy and sharp wit along with musical talents will be missed. Food for Thought one of my fav UB40 tracks, and early Stones.. JUst glad I got see both UB40 and Rolling Stones
Why do most bands and singers start off fantastic and then in their later years turn a bit ****….UB40 and the Stones being 2 prime culprits. Bowie was one who actually got better with age….Lazarus was, in my opinion, one of his finest pieces of work.
A legend behind the beat of ‘the stones’. Always had a cheeky side to him. Stylish and considered a gentleman by many in the music industry who knew him. It was always great to watch Charlie smiling behind the rest of the band as they all rocked it. It’s only rock and roll… but he loved it! RIP Charlie. Thoughts are with your family and friends.
It’s only now they are isolating the drum tracks and highlighting songs where Charlie drove the whole thing that I realise what a good drummer he was (not that I am well qualified to judge). RIP.
