The Conan Doyle is still standing on the corner, been a couple of years since I was last in there though, before we went to the Playhouse to see Dara O'Briain (highly recommended).

If you like live music @Stroller I always enjoy Whistle Binkies just off the Royal Mile...bands on every night til 3am.

The ghost walks are good fun, especially now the nights are getting darker. On a similar vein, the Dungeons at the back of Waveley Station are also a good laugh.

Camera Obscura up by the castle is an enjoyable way to spend an hour if the weather is a bit ****, and The Witchery across the street is proper posh nosh, with The Whisky Museum next door... a short stroll up to the castle from there.

Dynamic Earth over by Holyrood is good if you've got kids with you - from here you can do Holyrood Palace or the Scottish Parliament and if the weather is decent (it won't be) you could put on your walking boots and head up to Arthurs Seat.

Drinking wise, the Grassmarket should be fairly quiet this time of year, with a bundle of pubs to choose from, and if the Mrs is wanting to do shopping, drop her off at Princes Street and sneak one street back on to Rose Street where there's plenty of boozers to keep you occupied whilst she wipes out your credit cards. There's a few pubs up on the Royal Mile, but they are usually full of Yanks and Japanese tourists pretending they know everything about Whisky so I tend to give them a swerve.
where can he go to watch the americas cup

Is that even a thing? You lot down there got nothing better to do?

In case you're ever in Auld Reekie, there's a lot of bars that show the rugby when the Six Nations and summer tests are on. The Rugger crowd are annoying as **** so I try to avoid trips across when that's on but they seem to like The Three Sisters down on Cowgate as well as the usual haunts on Grassmarket

Strollsie wollsie can't get enough of it:angel::angel:

Twenty thousand steps yesterday exploring Edinburgh, which is a fine town. A chunk of those were spent trying, and failing, to walk up Arthur's Seat (ooer, missus). I was disappointed to have been beaten by it, but when the path turned into very uneven and quite treacherous stepping stones, I decided to call it a day. Not a place to break one's ankle. Walked back along the Royal Mile to the Castle stopping at a few hostelries on the way.

Evening meal at a very fine Thai restaurant in Castle Street...

Chaophraya Edinburgh | Thai Restaurant | Thai Dining with Heart

Highly recommended, not necessarily for the food, which was good without being spectacular, but more for the setting (a fourth-floor rooftop), the fantastic service, and the generally warm vibe. A real pleasure.

Good effort...there's a lot of steps and stairs in Edinburgh!

There's a Chaophraya in Glasgow city centre too, gets very good write ups. My work partner has been a few times says it's great...lovely decor inside.

'No stone unturned': Search for Post Office solution continues following closure

Superstar indie rockers The Libertines performed in a tiny city centre venue this afternoon, ahead of their two sold out Barrowland shows.

Songwriting duo Pete Doherty and Carl Barât played a stripped down 45 minute set at Assai Records on Sauchiehall Street, treating a small group of spellbound fans to an intimate performance of their best known hits.

Famous for songs such as Don’t Look Back into the Sun and Can’t Stand Me Now, the band are currently on tour after reuniting this year and releasing a fourth album, All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade.

The London rockers were one of the most successful indie rock bands of the early noughties, with their eponymous second album The Libertines topping the charts in 2004.

But they often made headlines for the wrong reasons, with the their substance abuse and tumultuous interpersonal relationships frequently attracting media attention.

Doherty opened the set with a solo performance of Albion, joking that he and Barât had argued about whether to play the song, so he’d just decided to sing it alone.

Although the two of them have had a number of public fallouts over the years, they seemed to have put their differences behind them as they sung in unison on the small Assai stage.

They even slipped from an impromtu rendition of Tell the King into a well spirited verse of Puff the Magic Dragon, right before finishing off with Don't Look Back.

A long queue had earlier formed outside the store in anticipation of the performance, with a number of passionate fans hanging around afterwards hopinh to snap a selfie.

A member of the touring entourage initially seemed to extinguish such hopes, explaining to the crowd that the duo would have to go straight into the van and head off.

However, the lingering fans were rewarded for their patience, with Doherty and Barât only too happy to pose for pics and sign a few autographs.

The Libertines will perform at The Barrowland Ballroom on October 17 and 18. Both shows are sold out.

Feck me that's longer than War and Peace....

Did you pull a sicky steelsyQUOTE]

Not me mate, self employed contractors can't affotd sickies!

Enjoyed the show last night, but it re-affirmed that I'm no Carl Barat fan. I've seen Pete in all his guises - Babyshambles, Pete Doherty, Peter Doherty, Pete Doherty and the Putra Madres, smacked-up, in rehab and clean(ish), and he's far more my thing.

Show started with a piper playing Flower of Scotland which got the crowd going before they started out with a bunch of oldies. Some of the new tracks, which for me are more lyrically and musically better sounding, seemed to fall a bit flat unfortunately, and there sounded to be an issue with Petes mic, the levels needed tweeking - they didn't sort this out til the encore. An hour 45 set again, so good value for £40.

As an aside, our son couldn't make it, so I re-listed the ticket on the Ticketmaster app for just under face value, sold within 5 minutes - **** Viagogo

Do all the mains come with extras from 'The Day of The Triffids' in ?

Turned on the wireless where the shrieking tones of Emma Barnett forced me away from Radio 4 within 3 seconds. Radio two got slightly longer, about 8 seconds. Now on 5 Live which is hilarious. I don’t know who the presenters are, but the bloke sounds not only totally ignorant of any topic he’s called upon to cover (gave the strong impression that he had never heard of Gaza until today) but also totally uninterested in them, which is actually quite funny. Of course he livens up discussing Manchester United. On the plus side neither of the presenters talk over, or in Barnett’s case, shout at, interviewees.

****ing hell, Nicky Campbell has just been introduced as ‘the voice of the U.K.’, which would indicate that we are in much worse trouble than even I suspected. He is spending the first hour of his programme trailing the budget, which seems to be occupying all the media endlessly.

I’m trying to convince my wife that there is nothing wrong with starting the day with total silence, and stretching that out until it’s time for a drink.

Try James O'Brien. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised. The quality of the callers he gets surpasses that of any other talk radio show I've heard.

I have heard him. I’m not interested in call in shows full stop, the psyche of those who are compelled to share their opinions on broadcast media is beyond me, even if I agree with their opinions. And O’Brien, even if I agree with some of his opinions, creeps me out.

All I want is news and current affairs delivered in a calm, balanced way, with a clear sense of priorities eg a faded pop singer dying while stoned in Argentina is sad, but not more newsworthy than another hospital bombed in Gaza. But not so according to BBC TV News.
