I missed it since it went over to Netflix - was the last season any good? Any mental Russian grannies in it?
Last season was good I thought…..not as gritty and realistic as the first ‘Summerhouse’ series but good Gonna watch it again now
Listening to British Drill music is like learning a second language sometimes…..flickys, bells, paigons, P’s and whips
After the Conflicted podcast recommendation from Steels/Raving I’ve also started listening to a podcast they recommend called ‘Untold Killing’ which tells the personal stories of some of the thousands of Bosnian Muslims killed by Serbs in Srebrenica. A brutal story of how former friends happily killed their neighbours due to ethnicity and hard to listen without getting emotional. Brings some understanding to how a young, Muslim youth would be manipulated to supporting jihad.
Following on from some discussions initiated by Stainsey’s experience with a lady with dementia, there is a very eloquent and moving story in the Sunday Times Magazine today, by an American lady who’s husband, when diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, was determined to go out on his own terms. Because he wasn’t within 6 months of death the assisted dying practices in the US were not available to him, so they went to Dignitas in Switzerland. She describes the experience very clearly and calmly, along with their backstory. As well as moving I found it very helpful. It’s beyond me that in the U.K. we still don’t have assisted dying, let alone the ‘accompanied suicide’ provided by Dignitas, which is really the only option for those with long term neurodegenerative illnesses, because you need to be able not only to pass the interviews as to whether you really want to go ahead, but also commit the act of drinking the sodium pentobarbital without help - which you might not be able to do if within 6 months of death, cognitive and or physical control could have gone (of course you also need lots of independent doctors providing evidence of your condition and prognosis before you get there). Anyway, meant to be a review, not a soapbox. The gentleman’s name was Brian Ameche, he died in 2020 aged 66.
Totally with you on this G.I see far too many elders who lay in their beds all day, like half dead zombies with just the occasional carer popping in for 15 mins to make them a sandwich and change their piss filled nappies…….it’s no life whatsoever and the indignity of it all is totally beyond me. I had a lovely conversation with a 93 year old lady last week, who was originally from North Kensington, spoke with a thick cockney accent and swore like a trooper. As I do, I like to chat to people and make them at ease about taking them to hospital if necessary and talk about their lives and what they did . She told me about her husband of 60 odd years who had died recently, about her daughter who visited most days and and about being evacuated during the war….she even flirted with me and embarrassed me like crazy. I asked her if she was looking forward to receiving her telegram from the queen when she reaches 100…..”Nah darlin’ “, she replied “I’ve ‘ad me time now and just wanna ****in’ die”. To be honest I don’t know if I should laugh or cry…..so I did both. She was my favourite patient of the day.
