I went through a phase of watching a lot of Japanese and Korean horror/thrillers, and also a lot of Chinese/Hong Kong films by John Woo (before he became a Hollywood darling) and his contempories.

The US remakes of some of these films is almost akin to blasphemy - The Grudge, The Eye, Old Boy, Ring - none of them carry the same level of tension and horror as the originals.

The only really decent remake I can recall is The Departed, a remake of Infernal Affairs.

Almost forgot the Polish film ‘Volhynia’.....one of the most horrific films about the Second World War I’ve ever seen. It shows the tensions between the Ukrainian and Polish civilians and militia and the atrocities that took place.
A brilliant but disturbing film.

Try The Battle of Algiers, about the Algerian war of independence. They wouldn’t show it in France until the 1970s.

Or, on another tack Bicycle Thieves, for me the most moving piece of cinema ever, set in post war Rome. Probably number 1 on my favourite films list. For today anyway.

Both films feature non professional actors.

My recommendations

Japanese - Battle Royale
Chinese - City of Life and Death
Belorussian - Come and See
Russian - Battle of Leningrad/Iron Fury

All worth a couple of hours of your time

Battle Royale is great

Try Audition - slow burner, but I nearly vomited at the end it's so graphic

Korean films - Old Boy is great, but the other two films in that trilogy really get overlooked because it is so good - Sympathy for Mr Vengence and Lady Vengence equally as chilling.

Some good Spanish horror films - [Rec], Pans Labyrinth and The Orphange.

I enjoyed the original Let The Right One In, Swedish vampire film - fairly decent remake in the US too.

Great Chinese war films, Red Cliff and Red Cliff 2, about a huge battle at the end of the Han Dynasty in AD208.
