Off Topic The QPR Not 606 Rolling Election Poll

So the Tories come out of the election with an absolute majority in parliament, a result many of them dared not dream of. Yet they and their supporters maintain this fixation with the SNP (that nasty old creep David Starkey comparing them to the Nazis in the paper today). Already finding someone else to blame for their own inevitable **** ups. This government will fail because it is witless and lacking minerals, not because of the SNP or EU. Their friends the international currency and stock traders will knife them sooner or later, and of course they will tear each other to pieces as they fight for their self interest, Started already over EU, MPs pay and boundary changes. Feckless ****ers.

I could, of course, have written something very similar in the event of a Labour win.

He's just an older version of Peter Hitchens. I'm sorry Stan, I know you like him, but I think he's an insufferable oaf living in a time warp.

I've never read articles from anyone other than P Hitchens and got to the end thinking that it was a sarcastic ruse, only to reread them & come to the harrowing realisation that it was a genuine contribution from a "learned" individual. I can't convey in mere words how cut off from reality and modernism that man is.

In an amazing world first you've got me mixed up with Uber. I am firmly in the Christopher Hitchens camp, Peter has younger, less talented brother syndrome in spades. I'm sure he has thought himself into this intellectual cul de sac in an attempt to look different to his brother. He is of course one of those most dangerous and pathetic individuals, a convert from one ideological extreme to the other end of the spectrum.

I presume then, that you don't think that the Welsh, Northern Irish or Scots should rule themselves?

 

As you well know, there is a renegotiation process going on, with the intent of getting the UK the best possible environment for trade and business, whilst allowing some of the legal ownership that has been taken from us to be brought back under the control of the UK courts. Then a straight in-out referendum by the end of 2017. If we get the renegotiated settlement we want, Tory policy is to recommend we stay. If we do not get the settlement, then it's not completely clear what way ANY party (except the Lib Dems) would campaign for.

It wasn't a rhetorical question Chaz, I was seeking an answer. And you have given one - of sorts.

Cameron put the EU referendum into the Tory manifesto in a desperate attempt to mitigate defections to UKIP. When he did so, he wasn't expecting to have to deliver on the promise, but now it's real. He has already had to row back from his initial stance of' 'collective responsibility' government and is looking weaker by the minute. We are now saddled with a governing party that will be riven with divisions over Europe for two years and then further divided by a subsequent leadership election. Fresh from his election triumph, Cameron is already a lame duck PM.

 

That's a very pessimistic way of looking at it.

As a Brit abroad, this EU exit chatter worries me. Would I all of a sudden have to apply to live in France? Would my healthcare cover here suddenly cease to exist as I'd no longer be covered by my EU/British citizenship?

Just to highlight the point, there is more to consider than just currency and trade agreements.

Not at all. You put an overly negative slant on the issue driven by your own political views. My question is neither more nor less important than yours. I was just wondering if you were going to do me the courtesy of answering, as I did yours.

 

Nothing bad would happen in reality. In theory trade with the EU could fall drastically and you'd have issues personally but it's not like citizens of Switzerland and the like suffer when they enter the EU. EU countries largely need us as much or little as we need them, probably more so.

 

I'd describe myself as a very apathetic right of centre person. Couldn't be bothered to vote as I live in a safe Tory seat.

Just don't understand the thinking behind Labour at all, as an ideology or in reality. I just don't think it can work long term.

 

The UK is more independent within the EU than those 3 are within the UK

 

110 Tory MPs now members of Conservatives for Britain, the Eurosceptic grouping. Their 'leader' the ancient and tedious single issue looney Bill Cash has tabled an ammendment to the Government's Referendum Bill to limit spending on the 'stay in campaign'. Open goal for SNP and Labour to vote with these charmers and give Dave a bit of a kicking.

They say they want 'profound changes' to the EU for them to be able to vote to stay in. Presumably the profound changes are that we remain part of a free trade area but opt out of everything else, especially the free movement of people.
