Having a bad day at work, then I hear Farage looses, then resigns. At least I have a reason to be happy today :)

Sorry to rain on your parade, Tim, but what Farage has said is that after resigning, he will take the summer off and decide whether to stand in UKIP's autumn leadership election...

Have to say I've enjoyed this thread and the way posters have interacted with each other......must admit I didn't think it would last the 6 weeks or so without having to be suspended for a time due to various bust ups......fair play Stan for starting it and for sharing our pain!!!!

A remarkable night for the UK, just hope that Dave can keep all his party in line for the duration, the EU referendum will be interesting........also guessing now that the Labour Party realise that they voted in the wrong Miliband brother......

Cheers all.

We over this side of the Irish Sea could have told Nick what was going to happen to them. We've had plenty of coalition governments over the years and the bright eyed junior partners invariably get thrashed at the next election.

It's hard for them to resist the lure of the spotlight and they always start off by saying that they will be the restraining hand as regards to the excesses of the large party but the electorate rarely sees that and blames them for everything bad that happened.

Cameron will still have to keep the smaller parties on side however because those tight majorities tend to shrink sooner rather than later.

Just three constituencies left to declare:

Hexham, which has been Tory since 1924 and in 2010 the conservatives polled 45% of the vote, ahead of the Lib Dems;
Warwick & Leamington, which was ratained by the Tories in 2010 with an increased majority of 3,500;
St Ives - usually one of the last to declare - which has a slender 1100 majority for the Lib Dems over the Tories.

These three seats would give a Tory count of 331, or a commons Majority of 12. Given Sinn Fein won't show up and one seat belongs to the Speaker, in reality it's closer to a majority of 16.

Plus it didn't help Clegg that he was seen as a back stabber in the TV debates......poor tactic on his part.

I'm in Warwick and Leamington, no question of anything but a Tory hold, 72% turnout too.

Cameron has used the "One Nation" tag line frequently already, what do you think it means? The old style MacMillan/Heath Tory paternalist 'we'll try and look after everyone, even the working classes and poor' one nation, or the geographic, 'Scotland is still part of the UK' one nation? Or possibly both.

I was disenfranchised this election...as I am in John Bercow constituency (he is the Speaker) and it is traditional that no one stands against him (ERUK and Greens did though)

I did the only thing possible...

Bercow highlighted my problem, when commenting on the exceptionally high number of spoilt ballot papers in his constituency

I'd like to think he means both. He's clearly aware of the divide between Scotland and the rest of the UK, and arguably played on that to boost the Tory vote (which you have to admit worked, looking at the result) and needs to now bridge the gap as best as possible. As well as that, the party line delivered by both Tory and Labour was about getting the whole of the UK, no matter what demographic you use to slice it, all working together and moving forwards. He won, so now he has to start carrying that pledge through.

In the interests of balance, I will add that there's some bad news as well: David Cameron has only been in power five minutes and the unemployment rate has already gone up by three.....

Some interesting stories from last night. Douglas Alexander, former shadow foreign secretary, who had his political career ripped away by a 20 year old student. Ed Balls who was expecting to be dealing with jobless totals as Chancellor of the Exchequer and instead was added to those totals with virtually no notice. Russell Brand, who saw himself as a soothsayer and kingmaker, and now realises he's just an inconsequential twat with a squeaky, mockney voice

Thank Christ the odious Mrs Sturgeon has no power in Westminster.............all those seats and no power South of the border. I believe that it's only a matter of time before Scotland is independent. This will give the Tories an even bigger grip on power in the remaining UK.
Farage going will damage UKIP greatly, as he was the glue that held them together imo.

The highlight for me has to be Ed Balls, a consummate twat of the highest order, losing his seat. Brilliant!

331 seats is quite an astounding total for the Tories, given all the polls leading up to the election.

Still waiting for Ashdown and Campbell to eat their hat and kilt respectively...

Moral of the tale: never argue with exit polls. It's far more accurate to measure by what people have done, than by what people think...

To be fair to Nicola Sturgeon she did come over rather well in the televised debates but she lost some credability by not actually standing in the election, so she was merely a mouth piece for the SNP. The real downside is that Alex Salmond got elected so will be paid by the UK taxpayer....also did he give up his seat in the Scottish Assembley or is he now on a double whammy?

Think you're being harsh about Sturgeon Col - I think she comes across very well (unlike smarmy salmond). You can pretty much believe she's going to do exactly as she says in Westminster as its practically a single issue party - you can respect that even if you dont like the message?

You are right about Balls though

Yeah, maybe I was a bit harsh on Sturgeon. She certainly is a very good debater and I'm sure she will do well for Scotland.

Balls is the really odious one eh?
