And if you are high enough up the scale before your incompetence shows... No scrub that. At what ever level, if you know the right people once you're incompetence shows itself, you get kicked upstairs to a cosy place. Hopefully, none of that exists at Southampton. Everybody is perfectly competent and well suited.
Very painful watching Chelsea toy with us last week, but seeing them take Everton apart, well they are a very good team, there's a real balance about them and Costa is in fine form. My tip before the season started, and now I'm starting to believe it for the first time.

We cannot rewrite history though...we wanted Ron to stay, even recognising his faults (which we found amusing until he left... when they suddenly stood out like warts). Stek was a decent back up keeper for Saints but there was no way he'd be good enough to be number 1....that was correct.
We did want him to stay, but certainly there was a group of us that weren't all *that* bothered if he went. I think it was widely recognised that our end position last season was more a reflection of the madness of that year, than Ron's particular managerial skills (he kinda got lucky in having to change the system because of injuries). I was sad he decided to go, but more the manner of his departure than the supposition we were losing some managerial giant.
And I think it's OK to have been saddened/shocked by the exit, then with the benefit of time to realise that the grass can sometimes be greener.
Funny old business this footy management. The days of a messiah like figure who inspires a team to greatness have long gone. These days its the structure and context the club provide that govern so much of what can be achieved. I'm honest enough to admit I had a little snigger when Ranieri was appointed at Leicester, seemed like a nothing appointment. But the setup suited him and he played his managerial cards bloody well. Some fans also seem to have little tolerance for what they see as below par performance, and it's not always those from the most historically successful clubs.
Everton are 6th in the prem, another team 30 miles away from us who also play in Blue are 5th in their league. Both had large section of their fans crying out for the manager to go last night. Funny old game.
