Go back to 2016-17 and SFC finished top of the midtable teams on 46 points, 15 points behind Everton in 7th, and 6 points in front of Watford in 17th. This year the midtable looks like it will be from 7th to 14th. SFC could well finish on 46 points again, but 6 places below that of the 2016/17 season.
You see a fantastic recovery from one of Villa, Bournemouth, or Norwich? Throw in Brighton and Watford. The only side that looks capable of catching SFC appears to be WHU, although if SFC continue their shocking home form against Brighton then perhaps SFC will sink below both. But surely there are 3 points to be had at Bournemouth and perhaps another 3 somewhere else on their travels.
It’s not a mathematical certainty. Until it is, I won’t be celebrating.
I know what you are all saying, but even if we hadn’t won twice since the restart, we’d still be a full 7 points clear. I actually think that we won’t have needed to get a single point after the restart to stay safe.
Avoiding relegation is not a matter of celebration. Getting to 47 points might be as it would be the highest points tally since Ronald Koeman was at the helm. I would love SFC to get to 50, must that might be a stretch. Next year, given that Saints are a well established PL club, 50 points should be the target.
