I too get what he means. Mourinho had lost the dressing room, a dressing room that arguably is the second best on paper in the league. Bringing in a club legend to get the fans onside instantly was an obvious choice at that stage of the season, the players would react to that as well and due to the quality in the squad it really wouldn't have taken a management genius to get them playing to a far higher standard than they were previously.
All they really needed to do was let Pogba play number 10 and let him do what he wants, that would (and has) instantly brought the levels of the team up a fair bit.
