I think the precedent they would have set if they had charged him would have had a worse affect on the game in this country.

I think there would. If referees were making correct decisions, you don't think people would respect them more?

Look, It's difficult to see how referees could be better than they are, and let's say that this mythical better standard could be consistently achieved by all the officials. It wouldn't take very long before that was taken for granted and everybody would be saying... I know they've got a difficult job which, on the whole, they do very well, but...

It is a sign of the times that refereeing decisions can be replayed and analysed. Under that focus, the faults were always going to be revealed and the respect that they enjoyed in the past would be taken apart. Making referees work to a higher standard is not something one can flick on with a switch.

That's a good post. Can't really disagree with much of that. I complain about officiating as much as anyone, but I honestly couldn't suggest a way in which the standard would just suddenly improve. It will take time, but the current crop just seem to miss so many things.

How tedious the game would be without any controversy, what on earth would we have to argue about, peace and harmony is OK up to a point, but bloody boring after too much of it.

That old argument. Dare I suggest that it isn't football that you are purely interested in..?

Hmm, on replay of Giroud's goal, does Guzan take his hand away, or is that an optical allusion..?

Or not. NBC's commentators initially announced that, but just corrected it; he was out for a minute, conscious and lucid in the dressing room.
