And Burnham is a classic example of a politician blowing in the wind to get what he wants rather than what the country needs

From my point of view, what the country needs is somebody to stop the far right. If, as seems probable, Burnham is the man best placed to do that, he gets my vote. What the Labour party needs to do is to confront Farage with the disaster of Brexit and commit to returning to the EU in some form. That would also be what the country needs and would win the next election.

Streeting declares for Burnham, so a contest unlikely.

Who was the last PM to both enter and leave 10 Downing Street as the consequence of a General Election?

John Major, at least he won an election. Before that Ted Heath.

I hope someone can muster the support to make Burnham speak. Apparently his ‘allies’ say he wants an orderly coronation in September so he can work out what his policies are and who he will pick to implement them, ie he is currently content free. Even more reason to stress test him early.

Get your point. But I think that's the last thing going through the minds of the Islington luvvies or anyone outside Manchester at the moment. Whether they turn on him sooner rather than later will depend on whether their pet interests have been accommodated to their satisfaction. No doubt we'll see what Yorkshire thinks when he has dealt with with the sub-standard east-west train service and how much he invests in infrastructure development on my side of the Pennines as opposed to Greater Manchester

Major was already PM when he won the election, so the answer is actually Ted Heath.

I hope there's a challenger to Burnham, too. Rayner hasn't ruled it out.

I think Rayner will be more concerned with getting a senior post in Burnham's first cabinet

Cue weeks of bargaining now as Burnham selects his front bench / cabinet

I really think he needs some up and coming talent, not simply recycling many of those for whom the public has limited respect / confidence in

However, balancing all those vested interests, all of whom will want to spend, spend, spend will be no mean feat, and if he does go down the route of "investing" I can see chopiness in the financial markets

Well, resignation was Starmers final u-turn then over fighting for the leadership he kept telling us he was doing.

Love that photo of Burnham with all the Labour MP’s who are apparently incapable of leading an incumbent party. Surely there’s one in the pack? Or not!

It's the 10-year anniversary of the Brexit vote. Where are all the celebrations?

Meanwhile, Darren Jones and Al Carns are both said to be considering a challenge to Burnham for the leadership. I hope at least one of them does challenge because Burnham is looking a bit too cocky for me. He needs to be pushed into setting out his personal manifesto for the next three years before being crowned.
