In my opinion, veterans in the UK have been treated appallingly over the last ten/fifteen years.
When I left the forces in 1999, after serving 14 years, I was lucky. I had gained a trade whilst serving, accrued excellent qualifications during my time, and because of the length of my service chose to do additional courses prior to leaving to add to my CV. I've been pretty successful, on and off, in the years since.
However, since I have left, the British military has been involved in several campaigns that has left many of these soldiers feeling unwanted as we cowtow to our American masters and get involved in wars that aren't supported by the majority of the civilian population. The stresses of combat operations in places like Afghanistan and Iraq have had devastating effects on these guys, and their transition to civilian life, sometimes after only short military careers, is hindered by the lack of empathy shown to them by those in power.
There are multiple charities to help these veterans - Help for Heroes, British Legion, SSAFA to name a few, but they are diabolically underfunded and understaffed to help those in need.
I'm not suggesting for a moment we remove aid to refugees who are also in need, but those who have given up their time, lost their brothers in arms, and some who are in both physical and mental bad shape surely deserve at least equivalence? The outright, blatent cronyism in government dishing out contracts left, right and centre for extortionate rates is galling, when only a small percentage of that would help pay for the care these brave men and women deserve.
