Up this morning at 7am, turned on the news...still no result. Am I the only person that finds it slightly ironic that the self-declared 'greatest democracy in the world', can't reach an election result three full days after an election? Pretty sure in the UK and in France you vote, you stay up late for a result or wake up the next morning to a result. I know it is a big country, and people are constantly talking about election reform...I'd just have thought the greatest democracy in the world would have sorted this out by 2020.

It appears that votes can be counted days and days after election day whereas here we know we must vote by the 10pm deadline.
Maybe something to do with the size and spread of the population?
Not sure.

The question which is beginning to emerge is exactly what powers does an outgoing president still have over the 2 month transition period between losing a presidential election and the inauguration of the incoming president - what happens if Trump abuses those powers ?

I agree with everything you say about Trump mate, but I re-iterate what I said before.
A sweeping statement like, "he is playing to a certain market", tends to suggest that everyone who voted for him is like him or shares all his views.
This simply isn't accurate.
Trump has made life better for a lot of Amercans of all colours and creed. Amongst all the **** he has done some good stuff at home and abroad, where the likes of China and Russia know they can't walk all over him.
I fear Biden may be rather weak in this regard in the same way Jimmy Carter was.

Having said that, Trump had to go this time around.
He is an odious rabble rouser and America needs to be calmed down.
Hopefully Biden can achieve this.
I really like his running mate, who's name escapes me and maybe over time she'll take over?

Kamala Harris. She's regarded as pretty left wing over there, but with policies like gun control, healthcare and abortion rights, she'd probably be mainstream here

Biden looking in decent nick for a 77-year-old who’s probably barely slept for days. Maybe all that stuff about him being senile was just made up by right wing noddies trying to find a way to justify backing Trump but embarrassed to just come out and admit it.

“More concerned about this clown getting in than Trump” <badger>

And we'll forget that he thought he was competing with George Bush until his wife prodded him in the back and gave him Trump's name. If he lasts the course, it will be as a figurehead only, and Kamala Harris et al will call the shots

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story mate.
Strangely, Corbyn doesn't seem to be mentioned as the messiah anymore too.

Yep, agreed this is a concern.

There are many checks and balances in place that prevent a President going 'rogue' and pressing the nuclear button.
I do wonder what domestic carnage he will try to unleash whilst throwing his toys out of the pram.

In light of some of the comments recently I have decided to bring my time on this thread to an end. I first posted just before the Brexit vote and liked reading the huge majority of posts however in recent times I haven’t enjoyed posting.

Always said I’m no angel and most of the time I have enjoyed some of the stick in return.

I give as good as I get and I would be the first to say my silly humour can irk, some. But believe me, It has mostly been tongue in cheek. I can always take comments like ‘Tory boy’ and generally most other stuff. However snide remarks implying that I am some sort of right-wing racist or some Trump-supporting Neo-nazi not only came across as unnecessary and unsavoury but couldn’t be further from the truth.

After reading Finglas comments last night I asked myself a question, is it worth arguing with someone who’s company I enjoy over something like Trump/Biden? The answer was no. When I see Finglas next time at a game I want to discuss Irish horse racing and not politics. So I apologise to Finglas for our little spat. :emoticon-0148-yes: Adding the warning I received from Beth recently on behaviour, I made a decision.

I will return to the football threads which is why I joined 606 many years ago… long before all these divisive threads. It's been a blast but time to get back to moaning about Rangers... which by the way, I am an expert at. :emoticon-0148-yes:

Maybe. Doesn’t sound like there’s much to back that up though but doesn’t sound too bad a way to go. It’s worked brilliantly over here so far after all.

Getting a name wrong though. Must be senile.

He's not senile, but he's age ailing and he begins to look frail. He won't be a force, I don't think.

I'd be sorry to see that Ellers. This thread doesn't have to be personal if posters keep their heads and don't make unfounded personal allegations about other posters. And if they do, ignore it. I've been accused of being a member of a right wing extremist party by one poster here. I just shrug, ignore it and move on.

You clearly the enjoy the rough and tumble of political debate, a lot of us (me included, really enjoy and value your posts). Don't stop, mate. Take a break by all means, but I hope you come back soon! :emoticon-0148-yes:

It will be a shame to see you hounded out Ellers.
Unfortunately, with some on here, it's all about the personal wind ups.
Sometimes it's hard to bite your tongue in the face of infantile goading.
It's obvious that you're not a far right racist, but as we know, if you're in favour of brexit or acknowledge that Trump has accomplished some good stuff amongst the ****, you are obviously an extreme facist!!

Utter wum bollocks of course, which will be 'liked' by the most childish one on here.

Conventionally the outgoing president is seen as a lame duck president over this period Col, but I can't imagine Trump seeing himself as a lame duck ! Theoretically he retains all the powers of the presidency until January 21st, though convention says he doesn't use them - but does Trump care for convention ? I do not know what damage he can do in the meantime or if the powers are there to impeach him if he misbehaves during this transition period.

I read one rumour / theory / musing that he might even step down as President so that Pence can take over and give him a Presidential Pardon for some of the misdemeanors he is being chased on...

Probably bollox and I need to Google if you can even have a Presidential Pardon for state level crimes (as opposed to just federal) - but with Trump we should have learnt by now not to expect the expected...

Edit - Googled it. Presidents can't pardon state crimes so that one smells like nonsense.
