Agree I listened to an old Tory saying the same thing. He did say however that this will give them experience for future decisions... just a shame that some wrong decisions can lead to deaths.

Yeah bit of a shame that. Oh well.

If only they were in their roles due to having potential and ability.

So you don't believe in quotas then
Best person gets the job regardless

Generally yes but also agree with things like the Rooney rule to help people get a foot in the door.

Not sure that has much to do with Raab or Patel being useless self-serving ****s miles out of their depth for the seriousness of their roles.

I am just pleased the other lot didn’t get in. That shower would have ruined our country completely. They will come good.

I really don't think they will.
There will be exceptions undoubtedly, like Sunak, but on the whole I expect them to carry on being pretty poor.
I do agree that it's very likely that any of the current crop of politicians of all pursations would have been equally poor.
I've held the belief for sometime that this is, by some margin, the worst era of politicians in my lifetime.

24 hour news and social media leaves no hiding place for the minutest of failings, everything is blown out of proportion and the hounds run with it endlessly until they get their victim. They actually don't have to try too hard these days, some politicians are so bad you wonder whether they are a parody of themselves...

I wrote about this on the review thread a week or so ago but thought it might be quite apt for many of the political minds on here.

A must see is the 5 part documentary called ‘Once upon a time in Iraq’.....tells the story of the Iraq invasion, civil war, chaos and eventual rise of ISIS in the area, through the people who lived it firsthand....and really gets you to question who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. Never thought I’d say it but after watching I had more of an understanding and dare I say it...‘admiration‘ of Saddam Hussein and the way he kept the lid on what became whole scale violence from both sides.....
The West surely are orchestrators of our own demise if that is the way we install our ‘democracy’ on others.......
Compelling, enthralling viewing.

A war waged by lies and duplicity. Blair was the willing mug and the rest is history. Saddam was an evil bastard but he kept some semblance of order in the country. We learned nothing from that and did the same in Libya with Gaddafi. Take out the dictator and give them democracy? What a sick joke the 'Arab Spring' turned out to be...

Don’t forget that great President Obama.....just as guilty with his willingness to keep in power a corrupt and repressive regime that added to yet more chaos and misery.
Did you watch the series mate ?

I think it really will cement your views on the matter.

It seems funny talking about this in 2020 when I think of my father who lived in Beirut in 1930, he told me the West have never understood the Arab psyche and how they revere hard line dictators, it's something I've come to see time and again as every interference seems to bring the absolute reverse of what was intended. I feel so sorry for those millions of lives ruined for what?...

It certainly wasn’t for the good of the Iraqi people that’s for sure

Nor was Sadaam for the tens of thousands he murdered.

What would you suggest mate ?. Try and kill even more people so that the government we in the west set up can kill even more people that leads to a civil war that we let happen by washing our hands of the matter (so the public at home don’t complain about the foreign aid dished out to the ‘bloody foreigners’)...leading the deaths of even more people ?
No one is saying Sadaam was a great guy, but that doesn’t make us ‘the good guy’..however he had his place in the region and that led to stability, like it if not.

I suggest you watch the programme

Not saying we were the good guys, although I don't regret the demise of Sadaam. Evil bastard and no place for him anywhere imo.
I'm planning to watch the programme on catch up. It's supposed to be excellent.

I wish I had an answer but sadly I can’t find one......I’m errring on the side of a non-interventionist policy on matters like this (Even though the west seems to adopt that already when it suits). But obviously that has its flaws. However I fail to see how we, the west, can become the policeman of the world when we have funded far worse evils in the world throughout history, and almost certainly still do.
