Sorry Wills, but it’s all very subjective.......where does it end ?
So you’re ok about Coulstons statue being torn down by the mob but not say......Churchill’s. Now others might think Churchill’s needs tearing down.....ok fair enough. But what if the next mob decide Mandelas statue needs tearing down.....or Gandhi’s (You’ll be surprised how many Asians I know who hate Gandhi).......Who decides what should be torn down and what should stay ?
Just trying to understand the reasoning, but please note.....I think Coulstons statue SHOULD of been taken down, however mob rule ain’t the way ‘cos it opens too many doors for others.

Apparently it’s been a contentious local issue for years. Fairly remarkable enough tub-thumpers managed to keep it there in the first place. Being polite and protesting peacefully seems to be ineffective unfortunately.

Reactions: QPR Oslo
All the recent riots in history apart from the Poll tax one were after acts of alleged police mistreatment of a black person, you can't ignore the fact that racism has caused mistrust of the authorities. Johnsons casual racist language and the Windrush scandal doesn't help either.

No they weren’t, that’s just plain bollox

I was under the impression it was in the process (be it a lengthy one) to get it removed

I honestly dont give a flying **** that people ripped a statue of a slave trader down. Good on them. Like I said before, people are sick of words, rhetoric, meaningless slogans.
attacking police is no excuse though is it? Do you think that 3 blokes punching at a female policewoman is acceptable?

The Mayor said this morning (when questioned about the statue) he had more important things to worry about?
He is the first black mayor in Europe and said "can you imagine if my first job was to pull it down? You would all be asking me different questions now"

There were numerous requests for Coulstons statue to be taken down, they were ignored, increasing frustration, making people feel they don't have a valued voice. I'm hearing a lot about people wanting Churchill's statue being removed, and to a degree I accept the criticism of Churchill and for me the flaws of Churchill should be acknowledged more and certainly taught in history lessons. I've actually had this discussion and been against it's removal, the main reason being that Churchill is seen as a national hero to a lot and people aren't ready to accept some of what was done, and any discussion about this at this stage will, like I said previously, only go to push the people who are more sympathetic to the cause further away, it's a terrible move at this time. I'm fully aware of Gandhi, who was an awful racist and how do I put this, had very questionable practices with young females. Let's just say a lot of historic figures are deeply flawed.

What should be taken down? Yes it's subjective, and I don't have the answers, although Coulson was a no brainer. What I strive for is continuous progression, day on day. This requires more people taking that stance and going against Churchill right now is a naive move.

Nope......absolute riots. Take it from someone who was there.
But hey.....if it fits your narrative

Brixton, Toxteth, Bristol, Tottenham and the ones in 2011? the list goes on, there may have been other riots but those were probably the worst in recent history and had were sparked by some unhappiness with the police and their actions.

That’s the thing though Wills, however much we agree on one subject of history, or disagree with another....it is ALWAYS gonna be subjective.

Maybe the answer is to ban ALL statues and monuments.

But that’s not what you said....In fact, I’d like to hope you would admit, your first post was completely incorrect.
I can repost it for you if you want ?

Time will tell as to whether it was worth it. I'm sure Floyd would have much preferred to be punched than killed. I have witnessed police brutality first hand. Theres always the chancers along for the ride, as in any and every protest. This isn't going away anytime soon
