They can say what they want but when the gravy train stops and the good old British pounds stops supporting that failed system it will all come down like a house of cards (notice the play on words). TBH the wheels are in Motion now.
The EU is geared up for Germany and German business. That's why the weak Cameron came back with nothing. It was never going to change and it's sad that people cannot see that.
The sad thing about the EU is that if it could adapt and listen to it's people then the UK would probably still been in it.
I hope we stop messing about and get out (like the people voted). It's done and dusted and we need to go it alone and stand on our own two feet.

No posts on this thread for a long time. I suppose it should be easy to understand why - politics is over, the right has won. Racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia are all back on the table, their proponents emboldened by Brexit and Trump. The far-right are on the march once more, raised up by those who think that 'political correctness' is a phrase that should be pronounced with gritted teeth and a dirty-smell expression. **** empathy and compassion, it's back to the 1930s.
I like having this thread, Strolls, because the "bubble" of people reading and replying is made up of people interested in Rangers, and therefore a bit more mixed when it comes to views on political ideas and events. Sometimes, I feel that people might decide to support a point of view like they'd support a football team, which isn't how I go about it, but we've all got a vote, so I'm interested in how people choose to use it.
So, the government is suggesting that the gaps in Social Care funding can be partially closed by allowing local authorities to raise a levy via Council Tax for this purpose. Once again, they're stepping away from their responsibilities and trying to make it someone else's problem. It won't solve the problem, and it won't cause the government any political damage in their voting heartlands. Here's why...
"Rich" authorities have wealthier residents. "Poor" authorities have poorer residents. Both authorities might raise an extra 2% for extra Social Care. "Rich" will be able to raise more money through their 2% than "Poor". Yet "Poor" is likely to have more people who have lower incomes and more residents who will need Social Care support because they cannot pay for it themselves. The disparity between the rich area and the poor area will increase.
Politically, the government may not care too much, as the "rich" areas tend to vote for them and will not be feeling the same pain as the "poor" areas, who tend to vote for the other side.

I think in this particular area it is the average person who is squeezed. The richest can afford whatever they want, the poorest are in the 'benefits net' but Mr and Mrs Average who have prudently saved and bought their own homes looking for a better life in their latter years are the ones who end up losing out whether by increased levies or, when in need of social care, having to eventually sell their home when savings run out...

For those looking for a decent current affairs debate, Dateline London is well worth a look, on BBC 24 News lunchtime Saturdays. Worth putting on Repeat Record. It's hosted by Gavin Estler and has 4 guests, generally one each from the Middle East, UK, Europe and US. Today's was a good debate and may be on catch up.
Just for Col, Uncle Fester, sorry Sajid Javid, plans to make all public officials, including elected ones, swear an oath to uphold 'British values' which include, apparently, tolerance, respect for other's beliefs, democracy, freedom of speech, and respect for the law. This will help Bangladeshi women learn English and integrate. These values do not apply to 'citizens of nowhere', those who challenge the government through the courts, anybody who can be deemed as being members of the 'elite' (excluding the government) etc etc. As Admiral Lord West, a man who can be called a patriot without insult, remarked, swearing an oath to British values is not very British. Javid is the Communities Secretary intent on upsetting Goldie by encouraging building on green belt land - except it seems in his own Worcestershire constituency, where he has twice opposed such plans. But there is nothing in his list of British values that says don't be hypocritical, so that's ok.

That's a really effective and significant step forward by Fester, they'll be swearing an oath on what? Almost as ludicrous as that stupid c*nt Sadiq Kan't forcing all private hire drivers (including English ones) to take an English test costing £180 to prove they can 'communicate' with their passengers, many of whom can't speak English. There are many black cab drivers who would fail that one yet they are exempt. I sometimes think our politicians should be certified...
