Over 4000 arrests in 53 different cities in Russia for anti-war protests yesterday - there's a groundswell of public opinion who are against this. Putin may well be able to ignore this (if anyone even has the balls to tell him) but some of his underlings will be aware. It's a matter of what they are willing to do....Putin won't let anyone near him due to his paranoia.

Reading through that thread that Raving put up, the FSB guy seems to be fairly sure that Putin alone doesn't have his finger on the nuke option and is hopeful that others will prevent him going apocalyptic.

It's difficult to assume things in this, but you can only see it ending up with Putin being toppled from power, either peacefully, in a coup, or even his own suicide. Russia and it's people just can't afford for this to carry on for too long.

I posted a while back that I hoped and suspected that Putin couldn't just walk into a room and press a big red button.
This report seems to give hope that there are indeed measures and protocols in place, as there are in the West.
The biggest concern for me, other than the increasing slaughter of innocent people is that Putin is being pushed further and further into a corner.
How he'll react next is worrying imo.

It's very very hard to see what Russia stands to gain now, in any eventuality.
Thats why i thought he wouldn’t invade. Pointless operation. Not enough men for occupation. Wrong time of year. Its starting to get muddy. ill planned and ill prepared. He will never win this.

All adds to the thought that Putin is now mentally unstable imo.
Not sure he would of done something quite like this a while ago.
I do worry that we just don't know how far he's prepared to go.

There are safe guards for that and hopefully normal people are still in place. He will have his inner circle but just looking at the stories coming out of Russian casualties, low morale, Generals concerned, people in Russia demonstrating and the isolation of Putin hopefully means they will get rid at some point.
Those horrific images of children dying and the utter destruction of cities will be hitting home. Propaganda is only useful for so long.when the dead bodies and soldiers return home, people will see through the lies.

Things are starting to bite here....just filled my car - £1.60 a litre for diesel - WTF!! Over £100 to fill the car - **** man, this is brutal. I do two tanks, sometimes three a week and this is really going to cut into my profits. Watch everything on the shelves go up soon because of the added transport costs....there are going to be a lot of hungry people out there relying on food banks soon

And the size of the gas bills that'll be coming in... Still, maybe we'll all start dressing warmly around the house like its winter, instead of in shirts and blouses with the thermo turned up. We got soft in the C20th.

I read that the Russians took crematoriums with them, so the bodies would never go back to their families.

On both sides this is heartbreaking.
This war is not the making of the ordinary Russian soldier. Many of them thought they were just on maneuvers until they found they were actually fighting.
The Ukrainians are fighting for their country and their families.
So many people will die. It is heartbreaking

Agree the whole whole thing is horrific. I would add that some Russian soldiers have been doing some disgusting things. There has been reports of rapes and indiscriminate shootings of innocent people. War is s##t.

I've seen three garages charging 179.9 for diesel, motorway prices in town, Shell and Texaco taking the piss...
