MITO, it's as simple and as complicated as you say. Last season will never be repeated. Neither should it as ultimately it was unsuccessful. Anyone who was expecting the same roller-coater ride was delusional. We need new players and a new strategy so that we are not so reliant upon 1 man. Sell Suarez and buy those who have the potential to take on their part of the task. BUT don't buy World Cup marquee players - thy'll only let you down!!
I find it interesting to see the different comments on Suarez leaving. Some saying the sky is falling down and the dawn of the apocalypse is near then others reciting our history of strikers as proof that we'll replace Suarez with someone else just as good but different. Like MITO said, we're not going to miss the goals and assists that Suarez gave us, those can be replaced with other signings as has been shown in the PL for years amongst other clubs, but what we can't readily replace is his influence. Those moments of pure magic, genius and inspiration which completely change a game. I don't worry, for this season, about us scoring enough goals without Suarez, I worry about who our game changer will be. It's easy to say we'll just share the responsibility out but Spuds have shown that it doesn't always work that way. In my opinion, every top team needs that top drawer game changer; Messi, Neymar, Bale, Suarez, Ronaldo, Ozil, Robben, Iniesta, Hazard, Reus or Ibrahimovic. Most of the top teams have one (or more). I'm not saying we need to buy one of that calibre now, but we need to buy someone who has the potential to get there in the next few years. Lallana? Nope. Lambert? Nope. Can? Nope. It's not relying on one player - we won without Suarez after all - It's having that one player available who makes a difference when your other 'shared task' players just don't step up. For me, I see the likes of Rodriguez, Sanchez, Griezmann, Markovic, Shaqiri, Yarmolenko and Konoplyanka as players who are available and have that moment within them to change a game. They're also young enough to get better and hopefully reach the level as those players above.
This is just a question but when Klopp took over at Dortmund what stand out players did they have or did they sign. As far as I am aware they had a lot of players with potential who needed the right environment to bring their talents through. Klopp gave them that and now they have several players who I would love to see it Liverpool. I believe that Rodgers is doing things in a similar way. We won't attract the likes of Robben, messi et al. So we have to go for the players who he feels will fit the system, have great potential and really want to play for the club. Last season was incredible and it would be unbelievable to achieve that again esp with CL football. But that will be the aim and, although he has had a few misfires in the transfer market, I like the players he signed so far regardless of fee and I like most of those who we appear to be targeting. We would all love to see a reus or a Iniesta walk through the gates but, at the moment it ain't gonna happen.
Dortmund bought Reus (their only real big money signing), Gundogan, Lewandowski, Hummels and Subotic in the last 4/5 years or so for fairly cheap. They bought plenty others for next to nothing or on a free like Kagawa or the fullback whose name I can never spell. They had a few players with potential, but bought a lot of players who had potential too. I'm not saying we should be buying the likes of Robben or Messi. Infact, I've said quite clearly that we shouldn't and couldn't get them anyway. I am saying, like you, that we should be looking at the next big talents and nurturing them. Lallana and Lambert sure aren't then next big thing though, either at the twilight of their career or at their peak. With the exception of Rodriguez who would cost an enormous amount of money now, Sanchez, Griezmann, Markovic, Shaqiri, Yarmolenko and Konoplyanka are, imo, the big talents in Europe and all ~20mill or less. Those are the type of player we should be looking to get hold of and push on another level like we did with Suarez.
>> No thanks, prefer Suarez... No point crying over spilt milk. And please live in the real world not as you wish it to be. Suarez is a goner. he has given us a lot but he has also caused a lot of damage to our reputation and if anyone is offering £60m-70m, we should snap their hands off. There is no choice to be made. He is being sold. End of. Liverpool FC is more than just Suarez FFS (like many have already said). Some here are behaving as if it is the end of Liverpool FC. The club was great before him and will remain so after him. Better and greater players have come and gone. I wish people will get a grip. Many of us are glad to see the back of such a selfish individual.
I don't think lamberts fee will hurt us too much and I really think he could be an astute signing. I agree with what you are saying but there's many on here bemoaning the fact that we aren't making these marquee signings.
For the record is rather a lot more clean sheets at the back and 20 goals less as a route to cl... If we can solidify the defence a lot and via midfield too then add say a Shaqiri and cover for sturridge we can play the lad up top and hope coutinho and sterling and Shaqiri can blend to make a top attack but the best way to second again or more progress is to be much meaner in defence
Agreed, but I am not sure buying Lovren & Bertrand really solves our defensive problems. Going from someone highly rated like Moreno to Bertrand is kind of disappointing.
well if theres no suarez deal thats reality. can't afford 20mil on both or whatever... if we do suarez deal i fancy we'll knock on the moreno door again
Thing is we know Suarez is leaving. Every reporter has already said that Barca have told Liverpool they are happy to pay the release clause whatever that is. I think we are doing the same as Spurs in getting everybody in before getting the Suarez money so we don't get held to ransom by other clubs. I hope you are right, as I don't think anybody wants Bertrand.
It doesn't really make any difference whether we wrap up deals before or after Suarez is sold. The parent clubs of players we're after will know full well that we're getting a wodge for him so will try and negotiate accordingly. For this reason I think a few of us are going to be disappointed that their targets aren't acquired because it's likely that we just won't pay the asking price. Having had a pop at the worriers, I have to say that what worries me is not so much who we buy, but how many. When something works reasonably well, you don't change it too much, just improve areas of weakness. The loss of Suarez will force us to change the formation up front, and the weaknesses at the back really need to be addressed. To me that adds up to a lot of changes, and really that could go either way. I don't want us to do a Spurs on the back of a big transfer fee.
Yeah, like it being reported that man yoo having £220m to spend this summer, and the obvious effect it had on Luke Shaw's transfer fee, also like when Ashley knew we were desperate to bring a striker in at the last minute and knew we had £50m from the Torres sale and he ripped us off.
Ola! I'm a Barca fan and not here to WUM but have seen in the press that we're linked with your striker Lewis Suraez? I don't know much about him and have not seen him play, what kind of striker is he? Do you think he could work with Messi? I note he has not had much experience in the champions league or challenging for titles. Do you guys think he will be able to make the step up? Thanks in Advance
Brilliant striker, top 3 in the World. Will work with Messi as long as he doesn't have ego problems Has played in the CL with Ajax so no poble there and has won titles with Ajax, won't International honours with Uruguay and was in a title challenge yesterday. In answer yes. hope it helps Not hard to have a sensible discussion really...
Gracias! He was in a title challenge yesterday? Hopefully it didn't go well as that will make him hungry. Hope you get decent replacements with the money. In Spain it's best to sign a group of players from one of those middle-lower ranked teams so they have experience of playing together. Hope your board discuss terms with the players 1st before agreeing a transfer fee. Otherwise they will come across as pretty naive
