I remember Solomon Burke saying Bert Berns offered him that song, having written some previous hits for him, but he turned it down which was a big mistake on his part.

Berns wrote many of my favourite songs but is relatively forgotten compared to other, often less successful, writers.

Amazing how many Jewish immigrants to the the US or their kids wrote so many great songs. Quite a list of classics on this-

Bloke who co wrote it wrote twist and shout too.
