What happened to the thread directory and stickies?

    Monday 18 July 2011:

New signings Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson trained at Melwood today for the first time (in heavy rain).

    -

Ian Ayre today thanked the people of Malaysia for the unforgettable welcome the Reds received earlier this week and then promised: "We'll be back."

    -

Liverpool have confirmed Stewart Downing has been handed the No.19 jersey.

The England winger, who last week put pen to paper on a long-term deal with the Reds, becomes the first player to hold the number at Anfield since Ryan Babel's departure from the club in January.

Prior to Babel, Fernando Morientes was the occupant of the No.19 shirt. (not the most successful list of names)

    -

Gerard Houllier has backed Stewart Downing to prove his worth and succeed at Anfield after making his £20m move from Aston Villa to Liverpool.

"Stewart will fit in very well at Liverpool," Houllier told BBC Sport.

"I like him very much as a player and I am certain he will be a very big asset to them."

Well, to risk falling into the statistical fallacy, maybe that number is due a good player?

Downing will be a quality signing for us. Him and Adam and Suarez/Carroll will work well together, I think.

"We're currently negotiating with Jovanovic, but we couldn't achieve an agreement (yet)," a spokesman for the Belgian side told BBC Sport.

"We're very much interested and the player would like to come."

Sounds promising. He is on a massive wage with us though so it looks like he is going to have to take a massive pay cut to leave.

I think these wages are a mill stone. Utter and complete madness to sign this guy on 90k per week when plainly he was a cheap free. why oh why did rafa lose it so badly when it came to selecting players.

unless jovanovic gets a big singing on fee to offest the drop in wages he is going nowhere. the best we can hope for is maybe a lon out to anderlect to offset the cost.... maybe go for a preseaosn next yeaR? rubbish like that.

I don't see the mad serb ebing amd enogu ht otake a 50k per week pay cut to get to kick a football.

Why oh why do you think that when the stats show he was as successful as Fergie in mid-range transfers where he had to shop? He couldn't blow £30m on a Berbatov.

Rafa had to buy cheap and try to improve players to sell on or move up. Out first 11 was pretty consistent but underneath he had to wheel and deal, hoping to make a little profit on frees and the like. That policy will always have a high turnover and a number of flops.

The buys he did make had sound reasons for buying. Voronin looked good before and when he first arrived. He did very well in Berlin when he went there, too. He just couldn't settle here, or his mrs couldn't. You can't predict this stuff, not as a manager and not as a fan. But he was free and we made a profit.

It seems FSG are going to take a hit to offload Jova. It's the only reason he's talking to anybody.

    well now i must say the following;

    1. ferguson has bought some awful trash. bebe, kelberons and theres loads more examples. what he has is tropihies nearly every year to prevent and critism.

    2. Rafa. Now lets give rafa some creidt for alonso et al. But come on guys lets call a spade a spade. We all knew 95% of the time when he'd made a royal mess before the player even arrived.

    Elts talk examples.

bargain bucket; kyrgiakos, slow and a reocrd of being sent off. some call him a decent cover player, me? never a top 4 player even as reserve. Degen, what an utter disaster zone! jovanoivc; explain that one, on any gournd utter madness.

Mid range buys; dossna, 7mil the full going rate for a defender, utter and total rubbish.

VERY expensive buys; Keane (don't even try to tell me he was not on rafa's list, rafa even said so) Aquilani, the injury should have menat no deal. Morientes

sorry but as you come closer to the end the signins got madder and madder and made no sense.

compare and contrast to mr ferguson who signed up every current player he could on long terms deals AND then he's splashed when value was there but not before. H'es got young cheap, jones and de gea are for the future/now.

By all means state ferguson has had his share but in the end rafa cost himself his job by totally wasting what money he did get. to be frank a LOT of managers would have loved the money rafa got.

    ..............................................

you say the first 11 looked consistent... thats fair enough if you look at some guys though... what was rafa thinking with arbeloa? where was his long term deal.. he tried and failed 3 times to replace finnan.... Risse, dumped for the wrong choice.... my god alonso!!!

In the end if we take timing of buys and fees out of it and put them down to parry... rafa is the guy who made the call on quality players to go and found dross to replace them with. Had rafa even pulled his head in and got as many guys on long term deals he'd have had a better team.

josemi, kronkamp, degen... what do they have in common? answer is all bad replacements for finnan bought both when rafa had moeny and when he didnt.

Rafa is a legend for 05 and 06 but lets not defend him without seeing his failures too.

why oh why rafa, cost you could be still in charge with a decent team if only.... I'm for one happy to have kenny now as it takes me back to my childhood!

Jonjo Shelvey has welcomed the extra competition for places in Liverpool's midfield and insists he's ready to rise to the challenge of trying win a place in Kenny Dalglish's side.

Shelvey admits to being inundated with questions from friends about any potential transfer activity at the club.

He explains: "I get a lot of mates asking, 'Is that true? Is this true?', when they see rumours about me or my teammates. I just have to say, 'I don't know - leave me alone!' They keep asking and asking, but I tell them they can't believe anything until it's happened.'

    Updated:

Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Alexander Doni made their debuts as Liverpool fell to a 3-0 defeat to Championship side Hull City on Saturday.

Goals from Robert Brady, Robert Koren and Jay Simpson gave the Tigers a friendly victory they will remember on a day when Kenny Dalglish fielded 22 players in a bid to get his hefty squad fit for the 2011-12 campaign.

Both sides wore black armbands in respect for those killed in yesterday's terrorist attack in Norway, where the Reds have a massive fan-base.

    -

Kenny Dalglish admitted he was pleased to see a trio of summer signings make their Liverpool debuts against Hull City on Saturday, but could not hide his disappointment following the 3-0 reversal.

"Obviously we're disappointed at losing the game. It doesn't matter whether it was a pre-season friendly or not, but the fact it is pre-season gives us a wee bit of solace.

"We trained yesterday as if it was a game. Everybody ran about nine or 10 thousand metres, which is equivalent to what you do in a game, so it's like playing a game and a half in two days.

"We also travelled over this morning and it's not ideal, but I would have expected a wee bit better than that.

"As I say, it is pre-season and it's to get players fit and get rid of their mistakes - but I certainly think we've got a few mistakes to get rid of after today."

New boys Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson told fans not to be concerned after our 3-0 friendly defeat to Hull City.

"It could have been a dream debut. I thought it was in to be honest but it was a great save from the 'keeper.

"We created a lot of chances but just didn't put them away - hopefully we're saving that for the season.

"It's been good training, I've enjoyed it up to now and it was nice to be out there. A disappointing result but pre-season is all about fitness." Said Downing.

Luis Suarez is celebrating this evening after helping Uruguay to Copa America glory over Paraguay in Buenos Aires.

The Liverpool striker, with three goals already to his name ahead of the final, opened the scoring in the first half with Diego Forlan adding a second to give Oscar Tarabat's side a comfortable advantage.

The second half continued to be one way traffic as Uruguay dominated the contest, and it came as no surprise when they added a third in the final minute when Forlan latched onto Suarez's headed pass before slotting the ball home.

Congratulations, Luis, from everybody at Liverpool Football Club.

Title-winning winger Stuart Ripley believes Stewart Downing is the right man to help Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll top the scoring charts during 2011-12.

Ripley was signed by Kenny Dalglish when he was manager of Blackburn and was a key component in Rovers' championship-clinching team of 1995.

Liverpool have agreed new Aquilani loan deal - agent

The agent of Alberto Aquilani claims a deal is in place with Liverpool to take the midfielder to Fiorentina.

The 27-year-old Italy international, a £17million signing from Roma in 2009, appears surplus to requirements at Anfield and is widely expected to join La Viola on a season-long loan.

Aquilani's agent, Franco Zavaglia, has revealed the deal now hinges only on the player agreeing personal terms with the Serie A club.

"The agreement between Fiorentina and Alberto has not yet been reached," Zavaglia told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "If we talk of an agreement, that was only reached between the two clubs, because Fiorentina did not come to any decision with us."

Aquilani has failed to settle on Merseyside since signing a five-year deal following his big-money arrival two years ago.

He has made just 28 appearances for the Reds and spent last season on loan at Juventus.
