Afternoon all

Must have a quick rant about mobile phone companies.

My new phone, bought only seven weeks ago, stopped sending or receiving calls or messages this week. I took it back to the shop where I bought it to find the shop closed and no notice anywhere to say why it was closed or when it might open again. Returning home I phoned the phone provider and was taken through about 20 menus and several advertisements before I finally reached a human voice in a call centre. He tried to talk me through testing the phone, removing and cleaning the card, and reading back a long number which he decided was too long to be real. All of this was hampered by his heavily accented Englsih which was at times very difficult to decipher. When I pointed out the terms of the Sales of Goods Act he appeared never to have heard of it. After 15 minutes of assertiveness on my part he agreed to have a new phone delivered tomorrow morning. I suppose it's the right result but I could have done without the aggravation. I decided I would send them an email about their levels of customer service. I have just received a reply saying "Whoops, our email service is currently not working..." Says it all really.

OK...apologies...rant over...

You're very lucky to get a new phone! I've never been that fortunate. Mobile phones are wonderful when they work properly..mine is frustrating the hell outta me at the moment...the battery life sucks! I'm lucky if it lasts 3 hours...they don't seem interested in my complaints...i think i might have to take it higher! Gutted, it's a fab phone, but it's no good if it dies on me before my day has really got going!

/rant!

evening all...another Olympic day today, this time at the sprint canoeing heats and semis. Great place, Eton Dorney. Great atmosphere, but i think we were spoiled by all the medals lately, with no medals, and not much GB interest, it was fun, but not hugely exciting. Hey ho.

Morning all from a very overcast West West London...good to see a few more Golds on the GB toatl yesterday, sorry it was not so exciting for you H. Little Miss W_Y was very excited this morning as she is covering the Triathalon and we have a good chance of a medal or 2, so she may cover a medal ceremony with another GB Gold.

H - have you got a lot of App's running on your phone? They will reduce your battery life big time if they are all running...

Another Costa coffee again this morning no doubt...

H your best bet to improve your battery life is to set the phone to power saving mode (in the settings) and turn down the screen brightness (it's still more than bright enough anyways at the lowest setting).

Have a dig through the menus and if you find those 2 options, you'll improve your battery life no end!

Also, depending on the phone you have, I would look at turning off locations when not needed, especially if you have GPS Satellite ticked. It constantly tries to update your location, and eats the battery!

i have a little app on my BlackBerry called 'Battery Saver' - I've no idea how it works, but since installing it, I only have to recharge the phone once or twice a day at most.

But there again, I'm not as prolific a twitter as H. <whistle>

BB, I am also having loads of similar problems with IE. I have tried Firefox but cannot really get used to it either.

ofh -I'd recommend you try again - there are none of the problems I had with IE & the whole thing works so much more quickly. The only thing I haven't been able to manage yet is to transfer all my bookmarks, most of which are work-related so there are hundreds. :(

Giving it another go BB and will see how it performs. I had to download it again and during the download it asked if I wanted to save all my bookmarks. It has transfered them all. The only trouble so far is that it thought I wanted the French version and gave me that. Changed it into the English one and I now have most of it correctly but some is still in French.

Yes, Gold & Bronze in the Triathalon - Little Miss W_Y is over the moon at having the opportunity to grab them for the interviews and being at the medal ceremony!

Maybe I should put this on the "Some Fun for a Friday afternoon" thread, but I thought with the discussions above I'd put this in the Nest - it was told to me by one of my colleagues (the one born in Spain - if we do sign Alex Geijo, it's pronounced Jay-ho).

After banning the 8 badminton players for not trying, the IOC has been accused of hypocrisy for allowing the whole of the Australian team to stay. :)

Watched the triathlon - brilliant - especially the way Jonathan even got it after his 15 second penalty. The Olympics have been great

Nice one - BB a riposte is called for

lol i am on Twitter a lot ;)
Hi all, thanks muchly. I do turn the location GPS thingy off, and have a battery saver app too...i usually don't have my screen on brightly unless i'm outside (which i am a lot of the time)...but i have a phone with a big screen which apparently eats battery for breakfast :(. The thing is, if i don't use my phone i can make it last longer, but surely that's not the point! lol. I also turn off the internet when i don't need it on btw, which for anyone with a stinky battery is a good idea. But this is the worst phone i've had for battery life, it's a disaster, since it's also the longest contract i've ever had, gutted!

How exciting! She must be loving her job! Great time to start :)

I'm sorry for anyone who likes it but please - what is dressage? should we next expect Britain's got talent star a Dancing Dog?

Don't know if the news has reached the UK yet (it can't beat winning so many medals) but Mt Tongariro has erupted in the central North Island. If you like your geology to be active NZ is certainly the country to live in.

Bad luck Victoria Pendleton. :(

I don't know enough about the rules, but have to say that the decision to relegate her in the first ride seemed harsh - Anna Meares clearly caused what happened IMO.

Not going to complain though on two counts - Anna is from my home town of Rockhampton, and her gold puts us above the Kiwis in the medal table. ;)

An explaination? An excuse?

Neither really - what the article doesn't mention is the number of European & American coaches brought over to Australia in other sports, nor does it mention the ability of the athletes themselves, currently sadly lacking in Aussie sport - you can have the best coaches money can buy but that means zip if they haven't got the raw material to work with.
