I always used to bet on Super Kenny Monkou for first goalscorer. He was always about 30-1, so I used to put a quid on. It didn't often work, but there were a few corners from Le Tiss that landed on his head!
 
I don't bet as a habit or at all regularly. I have done on the one time I went to the Grand National for the day, when I went to Towcester Races with the family and on a trip to the grey hound racing years ago. Apart from that, it has only been the odd occasion at football (before I had a season ticket) and probably 5 times, which do include the David Prutton 33-1 first goal at home to Liverpool in 2005 and Nigel Quashie 14-1 first goal against Spuds the same season :) a fiver each time :)

That was when I couldn't get to many home games and it was a special day out. In the Championship season when I was back with a season ticket, I took my wife's friend's husband as they were with us for the weekend. I got him a seat next to my season ticket for the Derby game and on the way to the ground he said that he had a new betting app and was looking at the odds for strikers for the game. He wanted to go Rickie Lambert at about 6-1 until I told him to go with Jos. His words were something along the lines of, "He's a defender and 30 something to 1" ..... he was delighted when the big, box headed fella delivered the goods on a fiver bet.

He didn't even buy me a drink :(

Some people won't like this, but gambling is a mugs game for most people.
 
Gambling is no different to most things. You have to put a lot of effort in if you want to be good at it. That means hours and hours of studying form and stats. Not many people can spare the time to do that so bet on hunches or personal likes. Occasionally they win most times they lose.

Yep. It's not for me either. Dad used to do the Pools donkeys years ago. He studied form closely and never won a thing. If I needed curing of anything, that example did it. I am though, if memory serves correctly, between £130-140 up on one particular long defunct slot machine that stuck on winnings if you put sufficient money in it to reach a credit total. I would be even more up but the pub realised what was happening and took the machine away before I could empty it again. Again, that was years ago. It was the first time I'd ever played a slot machine with my money and I vowed never to play again. So I'm guaranteed up on gambling. And that's how it's going to stay.

Same for me really. Nothing like the same scale as you TSS, but years ago when I worked in a printing works in Salisbury, a crowd of us used to go to the Five Bells in Salt Lane at lunchtimes. They had a fruit machine there which I discovered the secrets of, and I practically always, for the outlay of a few pence, used to win enough to pay for a pint and a couple of rolls. I never got greedy, I just won enough for my immediate needs and then stopped. To this day I never gamble on anything!

Ramadan hours are great.

Everything is closed until 10, then business' open until early afternoon and then everything shuts so people can go home and rest before Iftar. Then the sun sets at 7 and the world comes alive again until 3AM. I love it.
 
As long as you only stake what you can afford to lose, gambling can be an enjoyable and rewarding hobby.

This season just gone, I bet a £10 accumulator on each of the 3pm Saturday kick-offs. This cost me roughly £300 and I won over £2500 from it.

£10 a week is less than what some people pay for their clubs, sports, societies etc. and it makes football even more enjoyable for me personally.

The danger is FOBTs (fixed-odds betting terminals) as scientific studies have shown that you can become 'addicted' to them in a similar manner to that in which a drug addict becomes addicted to the drugs they take.
 
My brother in law regularly pumps all his earnings into a fruit machine. Even if he wins, he keeps going until he loses it all. He's addicted to something, but I not sure its gambling. He's either addicted to the flashing lights and noises, or addicted to losing.
 
There isn't anything wrong in gambling long as you are sensible. I reckon I am up around £400-£500 over the last few seasons.
 
Any one know any nice pizza takeaway places in Southampton (around the town area). Thinking of trying something new and move away from the Domino's, Papa Johns, Pizza Hut.
 
I bet on footie every season, I start off with £20 in my sky bet account at the start of the season, and never add to it, and then proceed to bet with my first couple of week's winnings from then on. I only ever do small stakes, and usually go for first scorer or correct score. I have made over £1000 profit every year for the last 4 seasons, with my best year bringing in a nice 2 grand from my £20 start point. I'm very disciplined with this sort of thing and never chase if I start to lose, just keep doing what I have been doing. Just lucky I guess, although I do research squad stats before I bet.
My mum is a decendent of one of the unfortunates charged and executed during the Pendle witch trials in Lancashire, and swears my luck is down to the witch blood in the family.....but then again she is as mad as a box of frogs <laugh>

I'm told that if you'd put a bet on Ronaldo to score for every game he played this season you'd be up.

Yeah, in some ways it's like trading stocks and shares and to make any profit you need a lot of money you could afford to lose. I used to know a guy who was a "sports market trader" (professional gambler to you or me) and he told me it's about the odds and the probability, learning the little tricks that upset the market, particularly with in-play betting markets. There's more to it than this but a basic example would be something like when Man City or Chelsea go 1-0 down early on in a game you can get better odds than at the start of the game.

I have another friend who regularly uses Betfair to put a pound or two on the draw in relatively evenly-matched rugby matches. He says it's amazing how many times the draw is still a possibility in the last 5-10 minutes and he can usually cash out making a profit. Similarly, the odds on Ronaldo to score aren't great but he scores in so many games that this season you would have made a profit.
