Managed 18 this afternoon. Shot 84, but felt a better than that so came off smiling.

As mentioned the other day I am experimenting with some older irons this year, on and off. I played some Mizuno MP-33s today, which I have been playing a bit during the winter. I have to say they are absolutley stunning clubs. They look gorgeous and when you hit the sweet spot they are so wonderfully soft. I also have to say they are quite controllable too. I managed a couple of hold up draws against the wind which is not my shot shape. Saved by my new best friend today a couple of times though, my Wilson 8802 putter. I would say every golfer should try it once, it is the best looking putter I have ever used (and that counts for me).

Here is my bag contents today.

3 wood - Taylor Made Qi10
3 & 4 irons - Wilson D7 forged
5-PW - Mizuno MP-33
52, 56, 58 wedges - Wilson Staff model
Putter - Wilson Staff 8802

The low and high end of my irons I am settled on. I am going to dabble with middle irons a bit for fun. I dont tend to play driver as I can be a 1 in 2 with it and value accuracy. The 3 wood is my sons and I like it a lot. May try the driver version in a shop as my distance is not improving with age and it is holding me back for sure.

Good to see you’ve got into the Mizuno’s. If god played golf he’d use a Mizuno blade. Butter

I have my old MP4s in steel shafts up north. No way I was selling them. I.use a mix of Pro 221 through to 225s in my set down here. Cleveland RTX wedges - much prefer them over vokeys.

driver is the one club where the shaft is more important - I think than the head itself . I use a 65g tensei orange stiff and it fits my swing very well - whether I am swinging hard or slower. I have the ping G425 LST with it, and as a 3 wood. With the G430 now out for over a year you should be able to find a 425 at a reasonable price.

I appreciate driver is very much an each to their own , but that combo is worth a look.

Been out this afternoon. First time in a couple of weeks. This weather has the course in stunning condition. Fairways like roads mind, run and run and run. Greens in brilliant nick, not a mark on them.

Hope some of you have managed to get out and the courses up north are looking good. Coming up to see an old mate in a few weeks and we are out to play Brancepeth. Havent been there in donkeys years but have some canny memories.

PGA Championship starts tomorrow. Looking forward to it, I need some nice, calm sport after yesterday:emoticon-0140-rofl:

Can Rory do it again? Wouldn't bet against him.
The Rory country club isnt it?

I am looking forward to it. Delighted to see Rory respond to Bryson over his comments that Rory didnt talk to him in the last round. As Rory said "what did he expect?"

I wouldnt put it past Rory personally. I thought his game was unreal at Augusta. This course is right up his street. If he has that level again will be hard to beat. When he is on it only Sheffler can really compete imho.

Yeah he loves the place. Will be nice to watch him play a bit more relaxed and without the commentators just talking about the Masters constantly.

Bit of an update mate. I took your advice. I wanted the Mizunos regripping so went to a place where I could hit a few driver shaft combos. I wasnt getting very far but then the pro gave me a mini driver head. The minute I setup I felt good. I hit a few and he adjusted the shaft to a stiffer one then with a bit less weight. All of a sudden my accuracy is so much better and distance is increasing with each shot. I am back soon to try the PXG mini driver which they are awaiting delivery of. He thinks it might be perfect for me. Fingers crossed.

I have to say though, I am hitting my 4 iron at the minute so well. 220+ yards and 8/10 straight as an arrow. The 3 iron isnt worth being in the bag so far. So if I can get a mini driver and find another 20 or 30 yards my game will feel very different. Ditch the 3 iron. But it has to be straight.

Interesting to see a few lesser names at the top of the leaderboard while the big names are struggling. Good to see Luke Donald going well
