The GoingStick accurately measures the penetration (the amount of force required to push the tip into the ground) and the shear (the energy needed to pull back to an angle of 45 degrees from the ground). These two measures taken in combination represent a scientifically based proxy for the firmness of the ground and level of traction experienced by a horse during a race.

The information is automatically stored in the GoingStick memory and an average of all readings can be provided instantly.

However,
I have read a few reports ridiculing the going stick. These are from a few years back. Have things improved since then?

The going stick .What a joke!!!!

How can the going at Brighton be described as good/firm off a reading of 8.4 while York is described as good off a reading of 6.6 at the same time !

And surely, while some will argue about the soft in Ireland being like heavy in England etc, how is the 8.4 reading for Worcester decided as good compared to the same reading at Brighton, surely it should be deemed as rock hard as it's deemed jumping ground !

I too don't think the going stick is an accurate way of measuring how fast or slow the ground is. I think it's worth knowing as an indication of conditions, but it's far from accurate.

If I fancy something a lot, and I'm going to have a big bet on it, and the ground is important to my selection, il sometimes wait to watch the first race on the card to see how the ground is before placing the bet. As I've been caught out plenty of times before by the going description not being accurate.

I've known the ground to be given out as good, and the times in the handicaps are similar to when it's soft. Sprint handicaps in particular the ground is vitally important for me. You will get a completely different 1-2-3 depending on the going in those races

<laugh> Well that's ****ing useful then <doh>

As Shergs says, the safest option is to wait until after the first race (and see what the jockeys say) - and recheck later

What if your fancy is running in the first race Shergy, we are left with a crucial countdown conundrum! ;)

You just have to take the chance then. They are usually novice or mainden races to kick off most cards, and I don't see the going as important in those races, in comparison to handicaps

So here is how to accurately compare times (see attached file for jump figs)

Queen Mother Chase
Sire de Grugy:
TIME 3m 48.49s
GOOD (Good to soft in places; 7.5)
GOOD is 7,7 so take average of 7.6

Sprinter Sacre
TIME 4m 0.27s
GOOD TO SOFT (Soft in places; 6.4)
GOOD TO SOFT is 6.8 so take average of 6.6

Now you have to take the difference in the scientifically defined going (1.0)
and multiple that by the number of furlongs = 16

Convert the 16 into secs and add on to time applicable to the faster going (ie 3m 48.49s + 16 secs) = 4m 04.49s

The adjusted time for SDG is 04.22 secs slower

Well there you have it.<laugh>

Come on guys, time to leave the past behind. Embrace the here and now. I'm not too sure how things stand in your part of the world, but there are cell phones, organ transplants, space travel and the like today. Cast off those braces and spats and sample some of the modern wonders of the world. Besides, how can anyone take offence to an a gizmo with a name like the penetromiter?
