Imagine how it would feel to have Le Tissier in your side, banging in upward of 25 (usually brilliant) goals a season and STILL not getting picked for any championship! We feel your pain keener than most!!
I went through a stage where I got tired of all the constant Leicester love in the media but that went near to the finishing line.
... I think it is a pain shared by fans of many clubs outside of the Sky4 and Liverpool ... there was a time I actually stopped watching England due to the predictability of the squad ... the inclusion of Spurs and Leicester players in this squad did give me hope ... after all, doesn't it make sense to include players from clubs who have competed for the league all season? ... but the cast iron inclusion of Milner, Henderson and Sturridge demonstrates that who you play for counts for more than the form you are playing in ... Liverpool were well and trully put to the sword by a team that didn't challenge for the Spanish title ... in contrast our midfield has taken on everything that the Prem has thrown at it with flying colours .. and the Drinkwater / Vardy link up was a huge part of that ... go figure Woy
So, an unfit Henderson (who is lucky to be near the squad in the first place!!); and injured Wilshire (who cannot last the pace in pre-tournament friendlies); an out of form Sterling (who contributes diddly squat when on form and is actually a liability when out of form); an injured Sturridge (only started one of the last 19 matches for England); an out of form Barkley (who is so selfish when out of form he is liable to give away the ball in ridiculously dangerous areas) - ALL ON THE PLANE!! An in form Drinkwater who played the whole season for the Premier League champions and an in form Townsend (who I do not rate highly, but frequently delivers for England) LEFT AT HOME! I don't think I shall be putting up my 442 wallchart with any more confidence and belief than I have for the past 50 years. Now to tell my sons 'we've done it again'. Same old, same old - it makes me want to cry at times. We are going on a wing and a prayer as always. For the first time in years we had a real opportunity to put some passion and positive selection problems into the squad. Instead we are looking at easy choices for Roy, because if the first 11 don't deliver we are going to be in real trouble. Joke.
If I was Drinkwater I wouldn't book my holiday just yet. It's got to be nailed on that either Henderson or Wilshere gets injured against Portugal although if that does happen Roy will either still take them or take Carrick instead.....!!
Shame we didn't have any Norwich players in the squad ....because then we really would be Norfolk and Good!
... apparently both Drinky and Townsend have been told that they are not on standby ... so they will jet off on hols allowing Woy emergency calls for Carrick, Walcott and Jagielka when the sicknotes drop like flies ... subtle eh?
HOW is drinkwater not included?! Just when you think the squad is looking fairly well balanced, the owl goes and leaves out one of our two best holding midfielders. Scandalous
Individual cases aside, I'm not sure I see the point in naming a 26 man squad and then having to disappoint 3 players. If a week of friendlies and training is influencing his decision then something is not right, and the 2 he had to drop (ignoring the injury) were kind of predictable. Ends up with a day of bad PR for a decision over 2 of the 12 subs.
