Had it not been for that blistering innings by Head at Perth, this series might have been 2-2 and heading for a decider. Shame.

If, buts, maybes. One thing we do know and hopefully ECB and all know, you don't win big series, preparing like they did and playing like they did. You may win a test match

I think I'd have gone with Cox over Banton for the t20 WC squad (mainly because Banton is less suited as middle order cover). But in the main I'm happy with it.

Just seen how Smith got out. Good God that has to be the worst dismissal I have ever seen in cricket. How do you get bounced out by a part time bowler who normally bowls spin? Jesus Christ he should be massively embarrassed. The Aussies were simply trying to use up overs before the new ball FFS.

Bethell and Tongue. Chuck in Root and you have the start of a team. Tongue is an interesting one. Learned his craft on the batting friendly wickets of New Road and then rocket boosted Notts. Or put it another way, he played a bloody lot of red ball cricket. Of course it's purely a coincidence that Steve Smith seems to be his bunny, and Smith comments so positively on his bowling on the BBC app today.

So now listen up, England Test Wallies. That Bethell lad played it all wrong yesterday. On his own admission he watched the ball and played each delivery on its merits. We know that's not what we want. When we were trying to build a challenging score we needed mindless slogging, didn't we (yes Jacks, I'm talking to you on this occasion)? Of course you could try a different approach. Get a video of Bethell's innings and show it to Pope, Brook et al. Remind them that they are talented players and if they watched this lad they could stop getting out for low scores. They could have been watching Joe Root of course, but he seems to have been elevated to the status of superhero and therefore it's just about his innate ability not technique.

Wake up time

One week left for all 100 sides to finalise their pre-auction signings.

Phoenix have confirmed that Bethell and Ahmed will be two of their four signings, meaning that they can't pre-sign any further England players. So Livingstone and Duckett will either move somewhere else, or enter the auction.

Daily Mail are reporting that Hants are trying to sign Jack Edwards as Neser's replacement when he leaves. Not surprised as he was obviously lined up to play last season before his injury.

It's slightly disappointing to lose out to Yorkshire in the battle to sign Moeen, because we presumably saw him as Howell's replacement. But it's not a huge loss - after all, he will turn 39 during the season.

I guess we might look to the overseas market as a way to replace Howell instead.

Hopefully we'll find out who the Brave have retained/signed today aside from Archer. Presumably Vince will be retained.

Hampshire/Somerset combo helped England U19's hammer Zimbabwe U19. Tom Rew with 86 not out and Ben Mayes 77 not out. Plus 3 wickets for Lumsden.

Jamie Smith to the Brave. Nice.

Cricinfo said a while back the four men should be Archer, Smith, Stoinis and Stubbs.

I'm interested who our second overseas woman will be (assuming that Wolvaart is the first). Cricinfo didn't know who that would be.
