It's a shame that our away match vs Surrey doesn't clash with England's white ball matches. But at least our home match does.

They are scary with the bat. Roy tonight.

Good to see Abbott in for Holland. But tempered by Wood's injury and being replaced by Stevenson.

Very important game this, given that Middlesex are very similar to us and Essex (eg lacking a third top batter).

Great hitting this.

But then it is a small out-ground. I wouldn't be shocked if 200 was chaseable.

I was thinking to myself this afternoon that Weatherley might be our best option to bat at 3. So if today is the start of that, rather than just being a one-off, it does increase my wish to see Northeast coming back in for Alsop. I don't really see Alsop as a finisher (although I'd happily see him come in later and smash 25 off an over!) and nor do I see him as a better option than Northeast in the middle overs.

But having said that, Middlesex haven't done their homework. Why would you bowl spin in the 19th over vs McManus.

He scored 1, 0, 0 from his three balls against pace in the previous over.

I do think we'll see Short bowl 3 if not 4 overs here. Fast bowling has got mullered and Short can be tricky to get away.
