I'd have been very happy with that at the start. But as it happens, we've fallen someway short of what the top four had set us up for - all thanks to Fuller. 60 off the last 8.

Looking like a solid strategy of Middlesex's, playing about 35 bowlers and three batters.

Let's hope they keep it for Lords next thursday...

If we could just work out who to be our third seamer. Stevenson has come in and leaked runs (no surprise), and is also very poor in the field. We know the Abbott is having a horror season. And although Fidel is now back from the Canadian PL, he has consistently been expensive for us.

Having Wheal and Topley (and Crane) out injured has really hurt us.

(It gets sorted when Steyn comes back, but that creates an even greater problem, because we lose Munro.)

Why is Holland never considered for t20?, his runs would be useful too.

Good question.

I wonder if it's because he's the sort of pace, a bit like Berg, who batters can happily take on. Enough there to put the ball to the boundary with ease, nowhere near enough to take your head or toes off. Sort of a nothing pace, when using a white ball that doesn't move around.

But yes, I don't see what there is to lose by just giving him a go.

The Essex match is on TV tomorrow, if anyone didn't realise. A rather odd start time of 5pm.

First 2.5 overs at 0 miles an hour.

Next few balls at a 100 miles an hour.
