Dare I say it, but Holland is playing like a proper opener. Dug in to start with, not doing anything flash, just seeing off the new ball. And now, over an hour later, starting to cash in.

Granted, Ben Mike is a very poor bowler (he's on loan from Leicester - when you can't even get into Leicester's team...), but you can only face the person put in front of you.
And he wasn't facing Mike at the start.

And in fact, Will Rhodes in the opposition is someone for Holland to look at. He too was a bits and pieces all-rounder, not quite good enough at either to hold down a permanent place (at Yorkshire). But has now managed to forge himself a career as an opener with Warks, who gave him a chance up there due to a lack of success with other players. And he still offers them a bowling option.

Run rate is excellent as well. Over 4 an over. Even Patel can't slow it down.

I wouldn't go as far as to say you would ever choose to face Patel, but if there is ever a good time to face him, session one of day one has to be it.

Warks really have, surely, got this badly wrong. As we did away to Essex.

Having seen Essex dismantle Somerset having batted first, I can at least see some logic to our decision to bat first. However I can't see any logic whatsoever to Warwickshire's decision.

If SA had just spoken to their feeder side first, we could have told them that opening with Markram (alongside De Kock) would be a wise move. A bit late in the day to be doing it now - although it could yet change who our SF opponent is.

A 50 from a Hampshire opener!

Well played, Ian.

58* is his highest career score, across all three formats, by the way.

Big innings this for Donald. Firstly for himself, in trying to establish himself as a regular starter. Secondly for the match, because if we were to fall to, say, 180-5, then it just starts to begin to justify Warks' decision to bowl first.

Weatherley confirms it's a broken ankle. So that's him done for the season.

Four day match against Australia A, starting a week on Sunday (the WC final). So clashes with us playing Kent, and Somerset playing Yorkshire, but finishes the day before the t20s start.

I very much doubt we'll lose anyone to the Lions (unless England have been knocked out the WC, and the selectors fancy Vince or Dawson appearing for the Lions). But the likes of Crawley and Denly could be missing for Kent, which would be handy.

Crawley has indeed being called up. Sadly for us though, so has Northeast.

Outstanding century from Holland. The perfect opener's performance - he's looked comfortable all day. Have we accidentally found our opener we so badly needed?

Fantastic.

Someone did suggest Holland as a possible opener on here a few days ago...

If Donald stays in we'll easily get to 400 today which will make a complete mockery of their decision to bowl.
