England have recalled Liam Dawson for next week’s fourth Rothesay Test against India, with the spinning all-rounder replacing the injured Shoaib Bashir.
England men’s national selector, Luke Wright, said: “Liam Dawson deserves his call-up. He has been in outstanding form in the County Championship and consistently puts in strong performances for Hampshire.”

Good choice. Jack Leach hasn’t really hit his straps this year for Somerset, and Dawson has been excellent for Hampshire.

About bloody time.

It's shame that he'll miss our next two Championship matches as a result, but I'm not fussed - I'm just really pleased that he's finally got his deserved call-up.

And besides, those two Championship are both with the kookaburra ball again. So they'll probably be high scoring draws anyway.

I do wonder if this is the test match which finally leads to the ICC properly clamping down on time-wasting. The amount which the umpires have let both sides get away with this test match has been appalling.

I've never been someone who insists that 90 overs must be bowled every day without exception. The quality of cricket is more important. If I've spent the day in the stands, watching a great day of cricket, I'm not going to care if a few overs have been lost - in fact, I probably wouldn't even know if it wasn't for the media pointing it out at every opportunity. But there's a difference between a few lost overs over the course of the day, and constant breaks in play. Stop, start, stop, start. Break here, break there.

Crawley was perfectly entitled to do what he did to waste time, because so many others (Pant especially) have also wasted time in this test.

The current penalties of deducting world championship points, and handing out the odd post-match fine, don't solve the issue.

England have been fined and docked two World Test Championship points for their slow over-rate in the Test victory against India at Lord's.

Ben Stokes' side beat India by 22 runs during the third Test on Monday to take a 2-1 series lead.

However, England's slow over-rate infuriated their opponents.

In a five-day Test, 90 overs are scheduled for each day and teams can be punished for failing to bowl 15 overs in an hour.

On day two of the Test when India closed 145-3, 72.3 overs were bowled - resulting in 15 overs being lost altogether from the match due to slow play.

Match referee Richie Richardson ruled that England, even with time allowances taken into account, were two overs short of the target.

Captain Stokes accepted the verdict, with the England team being docked 10% of their match fee as a result.

Apparently we're trying to get Muyeye from Kent. He's having an alright, but not amazing, season: averaging 36 in the Championship (but D2!) and 34 in the Blast.

Punishment seems light. Public are paying a lot of money to see 90 overs of cricket, they were short changed by 20%. Will the ECB sending them a 20% rebate.....

That's good news. He's one of those players where I've always thought "What's all the fuss about?" but he has really kicked on this year it seems.

Just out of interest, where did you get this information from? I managed to find some interesting-looking articles from the Daily Mail about transfer rumours but they're stuck behind a paywall. I did manage to see rumours of Northeast back to Kent and a Gloucestershire all-rounder (assume either Tom Price or Ben Charlesworth) to Sussex.

Kasey Aldridge of Somerset would be an interesting option for us, I believe he's out of contact this season as well.

In the Mail. There are paywall unblockers online.

Aldridge has apparently agreed a permanent move to Durham. And yeah, it's Tom Price to Sussex.

What is going on with Ali Orr? Vince misses out tonight due to illness and it's Middleton (who wasn't even in the original squad) who takes his place, rather than Orr.

I can only assume one of two things:
1) He's injured
2) He's had an argument and falling out with the coach - this is more likely and would be unfortunate as it won't help anybody

Surely he'll get a run as an opener in our one-day cup team? We've got 7 batters left thanks to the Hundred (with Eckland and Mayes as back-ups) but it's the bowling that's looking really light. We definitely need Wheal to recover from his niggle to play the 50 over games.

I accidentally pressed to post a new message rather than edit, so might as well put something else here!!

Suggested one-day cup team:
1) Orr
2) Middleton
3) Gubbins (capt)
4) Weatherley
5) Brown (wk)
6) Prest
7) Organ
8) Kelly
9) Barker
10) Jack
11) Wheal (if fit)

No Turner, Currie, Howell, Wood, Baker, Fuller, Dawson, Vince, Albert (or Stoneman)

Good thing that tonight isn't a must win!

It's simply a must-not-lose-by-a-big-margin.

I'm not totally ruling out the possibility that we might get Varma to play 50 over matches. The BCCI are fine with Indian men playing one-day cricket overseas.

I presume he has no other cricket to play in August.

That would be a bonus if he does, but I still think we're very thin on the ground for seamers. Need 4 ideally and the above is all we've got, unless Abbott is persuaded to play or we throw an Academy player in at the deep end. And, even in the above, Barker won't necessarily play them all and Wheal has been injured recently!

Abbott played a fair amount last year. I wouldn't be surprised if we share the matches between him and Barker.

I've only just realised that Gloucs-Sussex has already taken place. And that we were one ball away from qualifying before even starting our game.

But even so, a last ball win for Sussex does nothing to close the NRR gap between them and us.
