The Panic of 1873 originated in the rapid expansion of the American securities market in response to the capital demands of the war effort and railway development. Many small investors got their first taste of the securities market while buying bonds floated to finance the U. S. Civil War. When the war was over, railroad entrepreneurs found a ready market for stocks and bonds to fund the massive expansion that culminated in the Union Pacific Railroad’s completion of the first transcontinental route in 1869.

After 4 years of uncertain gestation, the 3rd Republic was definitively proclaimed at Versailles in 1875. It was a triumphant defeat over the divided monarchists. Proclaimed on 4 September 1870 after the defeat at Sedan, the 3rd Republic got off to a difficult start. The period was very unfavourable. France was invaded by Germany and there was widespread social and political agitation. Since September 1870, the government of National Defence had been trying to make peace. But Bismarck would agree to negotiate only with a government appointed from an elected assembly. Elections were held in February 1871 which consecrated the triumph of the monarchist right-wing parties (Legitimists, Orleanists, Bonapartists). Gathered in Bordeaux, the new assembly appointed Thiers as &#8220;Head of the Executive&#8221;. It did not yet dare to use the term &#8220;President&#8221;! Thiers signed the peace treaty in Frankfurt in May.

gday Woopert - I think the difference between us and the current leaders when they play poorly they still win whereas we get a patchy draw. Overcast day been to the pool then got a replacement distributor from the wreckers so see how we go - my dad is coping ok thanks he has another blood test in a month to see how quickly the lymphoma is progressing - fingers crossed - with another dry day you should be able to stride purposefully along the esplanade being careful not to be too obvious in enjoying the local scenery - ATB

First Test match in 1877
Played between two teams of eleven at the MCG, March 15,16, 17 and 19, 1877.
Australia, with Charles Bannerman 165 retired hurt (including the first &#8220;five&#8221; in Test cricket) defeated England in what became known as the first 'Test' match.
In those days a batsman got five runs for a hit over the MCG fence. Bannerman only played three Tests, and retired in 1879/1880 to become coach of the Melbourne Cricket Club.
Australia won the first Test by 45 runs, Billy Midwinter taking 5/78 in England&#8217;s first innings. Midwinter also played for England.

The Factory and Workshop Act 1878 (41 & 42 Vict. c. 16) brought all the previous Acts together in one consolidation.
Now the Factory Code applied to all trades.
No child anywhere under the age of 10 was to be employed.
Compulsory education for children up to 10 years old.
10-14 year olds could only be employed for half days.
Women were to work no more than 56 hours per week.


Evening anti - Dry today whilst 'over the water'. Portsmouth used to have an airport, but it closed in 1973, after a few accidents. I remember flying to Jersey on holiday from the airport, with my parents and sister when I was a kid. Southampton Airport is the nearest one to Pompey now. Have a nice day.
 
8 February 1879 &#8211; Bushranger Ned Kelly and his gang raid the town of Jerilderie, New South Wales, locking up the town's two policemen, stealing their uniforms, cutting the telegraph lines and robbing the bank. Kelly also pens the famous Jerilderie Letter.

Evening anti - Mild with a bit of rain over here today. They don't make anything to last nowadays, thats for sure - we live in a throwaway society. London Dock Strike of 1889.

The London Dock Strike was an industrial dispute involving dock workers in the Port of London. It broke out on 14 August 1889, and resulted in a victory for the 100,000 strikers and established strong trade unions amongst London dockers, one of which became the nationally important Dock, Wharf, Riverside and General Labourers' Union. The strike is widely considered a milestone in the development of the British labour movement, symbolizing the growth of the New Unions of casual, unskilled and poorly paid workers, in contrast to the craft unions already in existence. The strike helped to draw attention to the problem of poverty in Victorian England and the dockers' cause attracted considerable public sympathy.

The colony of Western Australia was granted a constitution by the British Parliament in1890. At that time it contained less than 50,000 colonists and an unknown number of Aboriginal inhabitants. It was a remote backwater, isolated by hundreds of kilometres of sand and sea. The Russian Famine of 1891

In the decades leading up to the Russian famine of 1891, the country was actually a major grain exporter. In fact, farmers exported 15 to 20 percent of their grain crop during the late 1880s, according to historian Stephen G. Wheatcroft's account of prerevolutionary Russia. This abundance dropped sharply and quickly, leading to a significant loss of life that would ultimately alter the course of Russian history.

Not many firearm models today can boast of having had over one million produced. The Winchester Model 1892, very similar in construction to the Winchester Model 1886, is one of these famous lever-action rifles.
It is much like a compact or carbine model of the famous 1886 and has the same dual, vertical locking system for impressive strength. Many of its components have been scaled down and simplified to handle the smaller calibers, and here is where this nostalgic rifle shines.

Evening Woopert - fine sunny sunday morning - well I for one didn't see that 3-1 coming especially after the 3-0 the previous week did your guys have another "Shot" game or did the Trannys play out of their skin? Lazy sunday today with a BBQ this evening with the prodigal son as he is up for a wedding. The high command is having cataract surgery this coming Tuesday then the following Tuesday but when I made what I thought was a cheeky aside "well its going to cost a bit but at least you'll be able to see the dust on the TV" it wasn't received very well - lets see if Saints can capitalise on Chelsea's draw with Sunderland doubt it but here's hoping - off now to mention the Rugby Union score to my darling Australian wife - ATB
