The Panic of 1893 was a serious economic depression in the United States that began in 1893. Similar to the Panic of 1873, it was marked by the overbuilding and shaky financing of railroads, resulting in a series of bank failures. Compounding market overbuilding and the railroad bubble was a run on the gold supply. The Panic of '93 was the worst economic depression the United States had ever experienced at the time.

The original invitation to what became the inaugural Olympic Congress, sent out by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in his capacity as secretary general of the Union of French Sports Associations, was entitled: &#8220;Reflections on and Propagation of the Principles of Amateurism&#8221;. However, by the time the official invitation cards were sent out the meeting was referred to as a &#8220;Congress on the Revival of the Olympic Games&#8221;. Thus, on June 16 1894, the first Olympic Congress was declared open in the auditorium of the Sorbonne University in Paris.

Evening anti - New fence looks great in front garden. They are coming back later this week to complete work in the back garden (hopefully). On the evening of June 15, 1896, the northeast coast of Hondo, the main island of Japan, was struck by a great earthquake wave (tsunami), which was more destructive of life and property than any earthquake convulsion of this century in that empire. The whole coastline of the San-Riku, the three provinces of Rikuzen, Rikuchu, and Rikuoku, from the island of Kinkwazan, 38° 20' north, northward for 175 miles, was laid waste by a great wave moving from the east and south, that varied in recorded height from 10 to 50 feet.

G'day Woopert - sunny and hot day just returned from Sydney where the HC had an op on one of her eyes back down again tomorrow for check up then the same next Tuesday and Wednesday for the other eye - now off to the AB's to do the accounts as yesterday his modem had fallen over and by the time I got a new one and programmed it up it was too close to beer o'clock and I was starting to panic so todays the day - that purposeful walk will keep you warm ATB

Neville Shute Norway (1899-1960), writer and aeronautical engineer, was born on 17 January 1899 at Ealing, London, second child of Arthur Hamilton Norway, a clerk in the General Post Office, and his wife Mary Louisa, née Gadsden. In 1912 Arthur became secretary of the Post Office in Ireland. Father and son had first-hand experience of the siege of its Dublin headquarters at Easter 1916. Educated in England at Lynam's (the Dragon) School, Oxford, and Shrewsbury School, Shropshire, Nevil suffered from a stammer which, though it lessened, was still noticeable late in life. It prevented him from being commissioned in the British Army in mid-1918 when he completed training at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He served (from August) in England as a private in the 1st Reserve Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, then entered Balliol College, Oxford (B.A., 1923), where he read engineering.

The UK 1901 Census.
Each householder was required to complete a census schedule giving the address of the household, and the names, ages, sex, occupations and places of birth of each individual residing in his or her accommodation. In 1851, householders were asked to give more precise details of the places of birth of each resident, to state their relationship to him or her, marital status and the nature of any disabilities from which they may have suffered. In 1891, householders were asked how many rooms (if less then five) their family occupied and additional occupational data was collected.

Evening anti - Very cold again today. Christmas is very commercialised nowadays isn't it ? Like you, a stocking on Christmas morning outside the bedroom door, with a Beano or Dandy annual to read, some fruit, and a little toy to play with. Mind you, I was 26 at the time !! <laugh>
It's nice to be able to buy some suitable toys for the Grandson. I'd like him to have an electric trainset, or Scaletrix to play with, but cannot understand my wife's comments that at 6 months he isn't old enough to appreciate it ! Women, eh ? Have a good day <ok>

Russian Revolution of 1905, uprising that was instrumental in convincing Tsar Nicholas II to attempt the transformation of the Russian government from an autocracy into a constitutional monarchy. For several years before 1905 and especially after the humiliating Russo-Japanese War (1904&#8211;05), diverse social groups demonstrated their discontent with the Russian social and political system. Their protests ranged from liberal rhetoric to strikes and included student riots and terrorist assassinations. These efforts, coordinated by the Union of Liberation, culminated in the massacre of peaceful demonstrators in the square before the Winter Palace, St. Petersburg, on Bloody Sunday (January 9 [January 22, New Style], 1905).

The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 struck San Francisco and the coast of Northern California at 5:12 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906. Devastating fires broke out in the city that lasted for several days. As a result of the quake and fires, about 3,000 people died and over 80% of San Francisco was destroyed.

The 1908 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the IV Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event which was held in 1908 in London, England, United Kingdom. These games were originally scheduled to be held in Rome, but were re-located on financial grounds following a disastrous eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 1906. They were the fourth chronological modern Olympic Games in keeping with the now-accepted four-year cycle as opposed to the proposed Intercalated Games alternate four-year cycle. The IOC president for these Games was Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Lasting a total of 187 days, or 6 months and 4 days, these games were the longest in modern Olympics history.
