Ex-LMS 'Rebuilt Royal Scot' 4-6-0 No 46118 'Royal Welch Fusilier' stands at Rugby on an up express service in 1962. Built as LMS No 6118, originally with a parallel boiler, in November 1927 by the North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow, No 46118 was reboilered with a Stanier Type 2A tapered boiler when the original was life expired which, together with other modifications, turned the locomotive into one of the UK's most powerful 4-6-0 locomotives. Renumbered by British Railways in February 1949, No 46118 was to remain in service until June 1964 when it was withdrawn from 12B Upperby shed in Carlisle to be scrapped.
LMS 4-6-0 Royal Scot class No 6120 'Royal Inniskilling Fusilier' in original condition with Fowler tender and without smoke deflectors on the up Irish Mail. 23 August 1928 Number 6120 was built by the North British Locomotive Company to order number 23515 in December 1927 and remained in service until withdrawn in July 1963 from Crewe North shed to be scrapped in October 1963 at Crewe works.
LMS 4-6-0 Royal Scot class No6126 'Sanspareil' is seen at the head of an up express near Cathiron circa early 1930s.
The photo of No 6126 was taken on a glass plate by HW Robinson. The location is between Cathiron, in the distance, and Easenhall. The train is on the down line and is headed by No 6126 'Sanspareil' before being renamed 'The Royal Army Service Corps' in June 1936.
LMS 6P 4-6-0 Royal Scot class No 6130 'The West Yorkshire Regiment' is seen picking up water whilst at the head of a down express in August 1937. The locomotive is now in its final form as a parallel boilered Scot having acquired the distinctive angled-top smoke deflectors and Stanier's larger curved top tender. The deflectors were required because the smokebox, it was the largest diameter smokebox ever fitted to a British locomotive, would in certain conditions cause the the smoke to obscure the driver's view. Stanier's 5000 gallon tender provide greater coal and water capacity than the original Fowler 3500 gallon tender.
The tenders provided for the Royal Scots were built as part of the order for Stanier's Jubilee class with the Royal Scots exchanging their 3500 gallon tenders with the Jubilee's 5000 gallon tenders. Built by the North British Locomotive Company in November 1927 No 6130 was rebuilt with a tapered boiler post-Second World War and remained in service until December 1962 when it was withdrawn from Holbeck shed in Leeds to be scrapped in October 1963 at Crewe works.
LMS 6P Royal Scot Class 4-6-0 No 6131 'The Royal Warwickshire Regiment' is seen standing at New Street station. Built by the North British Locomotive Company in September 1927, No 6131 was renumbered as No 46131 by British Railways in August 1948 which it carried until November 1962 when it was withdrawn from 6G Llandudno shed to be scrapped.
