Yes I would definitely go for that. I have a small camping stove to use outside when doing smoked fish otherwise the pad smells of fish for days. It reminds me of a rather passionate encounter with a lass from Orchard Estate but that is another story.
 
On the subject of kippers I buy these online from the Fish Society. Not the cheapest but they're good quality and they come vacuum packed in pairs so they last ages in the freezer.
