Thanks for the heads-up, but I think I'll stick with my boring M&S knitwear.

Funnily enough, my missus bought a Christmas jumper today: it's reasonably tasteful and in no way gaudy, so I've let her off.

“Reasonably tasteful and no way gaudy”?

You say that like it’s a good thing Ponders. Thought you embraced the full tacky campness of Chrimbo (the gayest religious festival since the Ancient Greeks gave up ritual bumming)?

I haven't been to any of the Canary Islands. Fun fact for you...the Canary Islands were named after dogs, as in the Latin word "canaria", which is no doubt where we get the word canines from. The canary birds are named after the Islands. I can just tell that today is going to be a great day here in the land of GC Not606 <party>

So why do people call them The Canaries then?

So why do people call them The Canaries then?
"Because this is where the different type Canary birds were first found.

The guy who discovered them had his dog with him and the dog ate some of these birds and the owner killed the dog.

The dog was called dodo and this is where the phrase "Dead as a door knob" comes from."

No Dave, it was a simple enough question. If the islands are named after a dog, why are they called The Canaries?
Latin for dog is "canaria", pretty sure I monsplained this already. The islands had/have lots of dogs on them. The birds were named after the islands.
