To be fair if the first place I went in Scotland was the south suburbs of Glasgow, I don't think I'd want to stay for much longer, beautiful highlands or not

I have only ever been to Hamilton twice in my life. The first time was a family holiday to Oban when I drove through the night in the vain hope that the kids would sleep in the car instead of chanting ' are we there yet ' every 5 mins. We stopped at a 24 hour transport cafe on the outskirts of Hamilton for breakfast where you had to choose what items swimming in grease were put on your plate. The second time was combining a corporation function at Hamilton Races with a business meeting in the area. I stayed in Hamilton for 2 nights and it really seemed a very nice place to live being very much a commuter town for Glasgow.

Yeah I'm being unfair - Glasgow has a bad rep because alot of it is very grim and is really stricken by awful poverty. But it's improving and there are, like any big city, parts that are very nice. Once you get past Glasgow the drive to Oban is spectacular though!

We visited Glasgow in October and have to say that we were really impressed by the City and the people. A lot of the bad reputation comes from areas that have been rebuilt now and it is a very modern place with wonderful history within it.

To be fair Hamilton is not really a suburb of Glasgow but a separate town 12 miles away and, politically, more attached to Motherwell and South Lanarkshire than Glasgow. It is a town about the size of Lowestoft ( the only fact I got from Wikipedia ) and as I said before it did seem to be a very pleasant place apart from the transport cafe. Despite that I suspect that Norfolk is a nicer place to live than South Lanarkshire.

You are quite right 1950 but I did want to stand up for Glasgow in this instance. The Necropolis is spectacular as is Central Station and without wishing to be political, a wonderful statue of Donald Dewar which is undertstated but a great representation of the man..
