Actually, there might be some truth to the shirt colour.
There does appear to be a slight performance boost to teams wearing red. There have been lots of studies done over the years that show that wearing red gives you a small but statistically significant boost.

If two teams are evenly matched and one is wearing red then they are slightly more likely to win.
I think England should play in red for this reason... I don't have a link or the figures handy, but I saw a stat once that showed that the England team win more games in red than white on neutral ground.
