VVD has been done for ages. It's who else we will bring in that I want to know.
Just my opinion.......but I think we're still short of a few players to make this another positive season.
Glad VVD is on board but still need a couple
Tbh I'll be glad when the window shuts

Guan (itk from saintsweb) has included VVD in his team for after the break. Make of that what you will.

With Romeu and Wanyama looking a little more solid, I would be tempted to try VVD as the attacking midfielder. Someone who will run with the ball, as well as tackle.
Just a thought.

Following the first six games (3 in EPL and 3 in Europa) does anyone other than RK think we are only one CB away from having a squad capable of anything other than trying to survive in a league where most of our competition for upper mid-table have spent big compared with our bargain basement players in an attempt to replace last seasons top players who have departed?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that that is the case.

I have been worrying that if Everton do sell Stones, then they might just blow us out of the water with Celtic, if we hadn't got it all wrapped up by then. With so little time left in the window, Everton will be desperate - and will have cash. A dangerous combination. They already need one CB as it is. Selling Stones means they would need two.

Yep, me. I think we'll finish 10-12th as I have done from before the start of the season.

Wijnaldum and Andre Ayew are the only two that have been brought in for the teams around our level I'm jealous of (that I can think of off the top of my head).

Agreed, though i think the range is a bit broader from about 10th to 15th. I would take 17th right now if we can guarentee a run to like the Quarters of the Europa

I'm not sure that the QFs would persuade me to accept 17th. Maybe 14th?

However win the whole thing (and with it qualify for the CL), and absolutely I would take 17th now.

Me.

What I see it a team with good (some very good) players who haven't gelled as a team yet. Last year was very unusual (as RK has said) because it gelled immediately. I have no fears about "survival" at all.

They are buying Mori.

Any idea how long Clasie is out for? I thought initial estimates were only a few weeks but it has passed that now.

He got re-injured 10 days ago

I think this is where people get confused. The reason the calibre of player's have left Southampton, is because they're good, Schneiderlin one of the best in Europe, hence why we couldn't make him stay. We can't attract players yet from big clubs across Europe, so we have to recruit well, pick up young players who have potential, and let them develop under us. Spending £11 million on VVD quite clearly shows we are not "Bargain" basement either, we will spend money on the right players when they come about.

Sorry worded it badly. Meant getting to at least the quarters, so a guarantee to get there but could go further. In my (realistic/pessimistic) opinion we will never be a regular in Europe so having a good cup run is much more important to me this year than where we finish in the league

Me too. This transfer window is like a bloody separate thing I follow and support a team through. As in I also follow the actual football in something called the Premiership. Once the former ends, I can focus on the latter.

It's worth noting that the teams we've sold our best players to have all started almost as badly as we have. I know Man U have had three 0-0 draws where they also managed to get a single goal in two of them, so it hides by a slim margin the fact that they are pretty average despite their sickening outlay; but Spuds took one of our key CBs, and they're as pants as we are so far. You can also guarantee that Man U will finish top four come May, and Spuds will finish 5-6th. Not a lot changes in the world.

Define "survive." I don't think we are relegation candidates even with the team we had out there today which was short not just VVD, but Clasie, Bertrand, and Mane. I also feel like top 6 is out of our reach, although would love to be wrong about that.

So would expect us to finish somewhere between 10-12, but if things go our way we could finish top half. And I still trust Koeman to maximize our odds. And if we could finish 10 or above with a decent showing in Europa it will keep the momentum going and we will still be seen as an attractive place to play. Which will be important because I think we will lose Wanyama, and also Mane if he has a good season.
