Think you are both right. Bringing in players cheap, then selling them for big profits and somehow finding the next great player for cheap is probably the only chance you have.

But it's not a great chance; it's almost impossible. Which is why you don't see clubs like Southampton breaking into the top 6 very often.

A high league position is rather key in commanding (or declining) the high fees. Good players in good teams go for more money than good players in so-so outfits. A fine balancing act for Saints. It could be argued that relative success in the Europa, and a decline in the league would effect the current profitability of player sales.

Will we sell Mane? If the United interest is real and they get near our valuation then I'd be shocked if we didn't. Mane will most likely want the move (after all he went on strike at Salzburg last year when we bid to force the move)

Am I massively bothered about it? In a way yes, but if we get a decent fee then not really. As others as said if he had a good year this year then he most likely would've been off in the summer anyway, and that was IF he had a good season. We have to face facts and realise that we probably never be a regular top 6 side for a host of reasons, barring a massive change in how the club is run/the football world works

We finished best of the rest last year, but in reality we aren't much better than a host of clubs we finished above last year, and from 7th to 12th the clubs could finish in any particular order and nobody would be hugely surprised.

The only way we break the top 4 is if we assemble a team/squad that can do it in a single season, as building gradually/for the future is impossible for a team like us as the better players will always leave if interest comes in from the top clubs

I thought United were going to spend £80m on Muller?

Just find this saga a bit tedious and can't wait for September. I will be shocked if Mane was sold this window and believe he will behave himself.
As Beefy said earlier, this is the Man United PR machine at full speed

They have been absolutely owned over this Pedro transfer and that's todays real story

There is a definite theme in the press reports that United could get Mane if they want, yet another supposed target, Kane, is not possible, as Spurs have made it clear he isn't for sale. Well, so have Saints, but it doesn't carry any weight in the press.

We're the highest ranking selling club for now. There are a few non-selling clubs below us. Everton, for example. Swansea are basically amazingly not a selling club. £30m was stupid money for Bony - anyone would sell him for that price, and he's now basically a reserve player. They've held on miraculously to Ashley Williams, and are having to beat Michu away from the club with a stick to get rid of him. (Not so amazing now, but amazing they kept hold of him after his first season, even if they loaned him out.) He'd be out our door by that point had he been here. Not complaining as such - its a fact, as I'm aware, and am fine with it.

It's getting boring now, Saints are perceived in the media as some kind of one stop shop to fix every other club's squad shortcomings. Its actually surprising that we didn't do better last season if our players are all so damn good.Spurs can't afford him though, so this particular one didn't make me remotely concerned.

As I've said several times before. Our rivals don't have to try and beat us on the pitch. All they have to do to kill us off is buy our key players. Then we eventually go away.

That is unless our key players are inclined to stay or we say no. And that seems to be a a hard thing to achieve.

We have sold eight players in the past fourteen months to PL sides, seven of which went to the 'top tier'. Excluding transfers within that group (ie., Cech, Stirling and others), by my admittedly-quick-and-possibly-incomplete count, the rest of the PL combined has only featured the sale of nine non-Saints to the top six. We have been a one-stop shop, though whether it has been to our benefit or the clubs buying is another matter.

10 Pages since yesterday afternoon and I thought we had some real transfer business happening!

Bit worried about these Mane rumors, but that's probably party down to the papers expecting it to happen as we have no say.

To me Mane looks like the most dangerous player on the pitch, even if he doesn't score he's a constant threat and gets defenders back peddling. If we told him I would really start to worry about our chances this season.
