I'd go for berahino, younger more creative and much more potential, but I doubt he would see us as a big enough step up from west brom really.

He has a reputation as a trouble maker, but I believe a lot of it is media nonsense. Heard him in a couple of interviews and he seemed very level headed.
Berahino would just use us as a stepping stone. 200% Austin for me.

Have you seen many interviews where the player doesn't seem level headed?

Jose, Pelle, Davis (both of them), Forster, Bertrand, Morgan. All those players haven't used us as a stepping stone.

Jose, pelle, S. Davis are all older and we picked them up at their peaks. They won't interest clubs above us.
Bertrand and Forster needed a chance in English football - if they perform really well consistently they could easily up sticks
Morgan - after his Twitter out burst you think we aren't a stepping stone?!

If Austin bangs in a load of goals, and interests the big four he too will use us as a stepping stone. Why not sign the better player of the two, if the end result is the same

All I'm saying is, if you rate Austin above berahino then that would be a good enough reason to choose him. But to choose a worse player just because he might stay for longer?! That seems like cutting your nose off to spite your face. Let's sign the best players we can, and accept that we may lose them, but gain their talents and a load of money in the process :)

You have to consider the dressing room and everything else that goes with signing a player. They are probably the reasons we won't sign him, not because he'd use as a stepping stone.

Think of the bigger picture.

How long has Morgan been here? I don't call a player being here for 6 years using us as a ****ing stepping stone! Bertrand and Forster clearly enjoy it here. I suggest being less cynical.

Haha. I'm not saying that these players don't enjoy it here, or that some of the current group may in time grow to become Matt Le Tissier's. But 99% of players that we can realistically sign that will be worth signing and want to come to us will be looking to use us as a stepping stone. It's not a bad thing. It's a good way of running a club (Atletico)

There is always the danger that a club of our size will lose their best players, but for the first time I think we are seen as good enough that most will stay and many will want to come. Saints today is not the Saints from our previous PL incarnation. Last year was exceptional...IMO from now on we will see no more movement that happens at any other club. All you can ask is that players see out their contracts or leave when it suits us financially and on the playing field. Les Reed is not a pushover, but doesn't see the point in keeping a player who doesn't want to be here (unless you are called Morgan :)).

I agree that we sign the best players...no one can second guess if they intend to stay or go. If you don't want people to leave, buy the mediocre and decrepit.

It's like playing Football Manager in the old days when it was Champ Manager..

... Take on a lower league club, rise up the league by getting in freebies and selling them on!!

I don't think that you 'buy the best player' alone. You by the best fit.
