People are too quick to base their judgement on a single match. Vlaar was poor against us, but the whole Villa's team was terrible, not the mention that Sherwood set them up completely wrong and delivered the on a plate to us.
Just a year ago Vlaar was a vital part of the team that reached a World Cup semifinal and he had a string of very good performances. But then again, Van Gaal set the team to defend deep and that surely suited Vlaar. If we bought him, we surely wouldn't left him exposed as he was at Villa.

I'm not for bringing Vlaar, I don't think he would be a big improvement on Yoshida and Gardos. But if we do get him, that wouldn't be that horrible, he's not a bad player. But I believe that we can get someone better.

Yeah I'm thinking that. I wouldn't be unhappy to get a young prospect like Van Beek plus Vlaar (particularly if....*gulp*.....Jose got injured).

Do you want to hoard defenders? :D Vlaar, Van Beek, then Fonte, Yoshida, Gardos, Stephens, Turnbull, McCarthy.

We don't need numbers, we need quality. I'm for buying someone who will be good enough to immediately slot in the starting lineup. If we can't find someone like that available on the market, then I'm for making do with the options we already have, no point in clogging the team.

Fair point. But if Jose were to get injured, that's not a list that screams "leadership" to me.

Exactly right. Vlaar plus another high quality CB would be ideal.

I just think we would get better value by buying a 6ft x 2 ft traffic cone and popping it on the field instead.

Honestly his mobility is terrible, he's good at set pieces and man marking certain types but he moves with all the urgency of a glacier so no i dont think he would be a good signing.

Fair enough. Like I say, I don't know if it's the right answer at all, but was just questioning if it would be a disaster on a free! I would prefer to take another option though.

I can still see Stephens ending up a DM.

My business partner is a Palace STH and I asked him the same thing. Aside from the fact that they have four very wealthy joint owners, there's talk of a US billionaire waiting in the wings to take over. He expects a bit of cash to be flashed over the next 12 months in order to bump up the sale price. Risky way of going about things if you ask me.

I will say what I have been for a while. I do not think Fonte will retire here.

He'll go a legend when he goes (unless it's too Scousehampton or Spuds)

I think it will be or some where else in Portugal. Spend a season or two there then retire.

Indeed, Idealy he would prefer Sporting as that is his Favoured club I take it? IF not.. Somewhere Lesser pressure, where he can enjoy his final seasons.

Fonte will go with my blessing. I just hope he is here for the coming season. As for the two to three signings.. As a famous Nigel once said, "who knows?"

Won't read too much into what Fonte says...you can never say never in life (especially football life), but I am not taking it as him leaving this season or even next. My guess is that he will end up back in Portugal...though he did mention recently that his child/children (?) are English. I have no doubt he will still be young enough to play when his career finishes with us.

Almost no one retires in the Prem now. They all go lower league, US, or elsewhere in Europe. Would be financially stupid to retire at Prem level, when you can earn for another 2-3 years or more elsewhere.
