Can somebody with a better knowledge of all things IT than I, please explain how I get a pop-up telling me I have a virus, and I should immediately buy this software or else! When I check my security, it tells me I am protected and there are no problems!
I then go back to the pop-up, only to find I can't delete it by any other means than turning my computer off and re-booting!!!!
It's driving me nuts!

I use MSE for free, never had any problems with it!
I guess it is a security company using scaremongering tactics to boost sales, but can I prevent it?
I had similar, Dave, a small, annoying 
box in the middle of the screen which 'pretended' to do a quick scan and then show me how many gremlins I had on my system - plus, as you say, a link to a site where I could buy a fix for all these problems.
In the end, I had the hard drive wiped and windows re-installed which cost me about £30 but got rid of the problem - touch wood.
The guy who fixed it said it was a fairly common problem and the offending malware could have come from any website, email or just about anywhere.
I know this doesn't answer your question, but you have my sympathies.
Have you tried Revo uninstaller, a free download which after getting shot of unwanted programmes/toolbars etc gives you an option to scan the registry and hunts out and deletes all traces of the offending item(s) Hope this helps in some way?

Can't you try and DM Thai or Battersea? They both seem to have a pretty good grasp of PCs. Or Harry the banner man, perhaps.
I like wonky's solution the best! I've tried seeking help before from clever people like Thai, Battersea and the Gills mod brb, but I can't understand what they're telling me to do! 
Canary Dave I've seen this before. It goes under various names. Security Tool for one. It can be removed using Malwarebytes Anti Malware.

If you have a memory stick download Malwarebytes to that as you may have trouble installing it on an infected PC.
Once you have it on your memory stick, start your PC in safe mode. Then run the exe. file on the stick and perform a full scan. The length of the scan will vary depending on how much you have on your PC. During the scan you will see the infections being identified in the Malwarebytes window. Once finished the program will alert you. Choose the tab marked quarantine and select "delete all items". You will then need to restart. It'll probably pay you to repeat the whole process again just to be absolutely sure you're clear. This is what worked for me when I cleaned it from a friends computer.

Well, I downloaded it, cleaned up the ****, and apart from taking half an hour to work out how to get rid of the "Ask Jeeves" tool-bar, everything seems fine

Glad it worked. As it's a sticky, and I guess people will be coming into this thread from time to time with these sorts of problems, it's worth pointing out that Malwarebytes Anti Malware is the best virus removal tool I've ever seen. I've never seen it fail yet so if a virus is your problem then this should sort you out. I'd advise anyone to have it on their PC "just in case". It's a good compliment to whatever real-time malware protection you might use and I always run a scan once a month just to cover my bases.
I used to have this (the free version) but got rid because I thought it would conflict with Kaspersky? Is it worth using both in tandem? Thanks telford.

I'm not saying you'd need real-time protection from MBAM. I don't think you can get this function in the free version anyway. Rather just have it on your PC to use as an on-demand scanner as one of the posters in the link suggests. If the worst comes to the worst and something does get past your primary anti-virus defence, this is the best removal tool I've seen and it's handy to have it there if needed. I referred above to an issue I once had installing it on an infected PC where the virus itself was preventing the installation. I got around it that time by running it directly off a USB stick. I've read of instances where you even have to rename the .exe installer to "fool" the virus.

From your description it sounds like you had the same kind of virus as Dave. Reformatting sounds like a very drastic solution tbh. Out of interest, did you have Kaspersky when your PC got infected?
I use not 606 on my iPhone fairly regularly, not the app but access it on the phone's web browser. However this morning the phone seems to want to change to a page about android apps. This hasn't happened before an isn't doing it on any other websites I'm using on my phone this morning. Is there any reason why this is happening and is there anyway of stopping it? Thanks.
