Has your anti-virus software expired?
Glad to know know when else is driving your nuts!![]()

In the end, I had the hard drive wiped and windows re-installed which cost me about £30 but got rid of the problem - touch wood.
The guy who fixed it said it was a fairly common problem and the offending malware could have come from any website, email or just about anywhere.
I know this doesn't answer your question, but you have my sympathies.
Have you tried Revo uninstaller, a free download which after getting shot of unwanted programmes/toolbars etc gives you an option to scan the registry and hunts out and deletes all traces of the offending item(s) Hope this helps in some way?

So the hammer didn't work then?

Glad it worked. As it's a sticky, and I guess people will be coming into this thread from time to time with these sorts of problems, it's worth pointing out that Malwarebytes Anti Malware is the best virus removal tool I've ever seen. I've never seen it fail yet so if a virus is your problem then this should sort you out. I'd advise anyone to have it on their PC "just in case". It's a good compliment to whatever real-time malware protection you might use and I always run a scan once a month just to cover my bases.Glad it worked. I used to have this (the free version) but got rid because I thought it would conflict with Kaspersky? Is it worth using both in tandem? Thanks telford.
