The many have ruined it for the few. I'm big on tats, have a full sleeve, but I pondered for 10 years, researched, sketched, waited to have meaningful things and designed the whole thing myself, then spend a nice chunk getting it done by someone who actually has talent.
Not saying you have to go through the same process but I know i'll never regret any of it and will look badass at the age of 70 with it.
Unfortunately too many have ruined the art and turned it into a ****ty trend.

I'm popping to see my tattooist today to discuss ideas for an appointment on Thursday
I'm having a lower leg sleeve extended up past my knee (assuming the discussion today goes as planned and what I want is suitable for there)
I do have a couple from early doors which could be better, but I'm still happy with them
Recent tattoos (in last 15 years or so) have all been after lots of research and thinking and mean a lot to me, even though unless you really understand the symbology of Japanese irezumi you wouldn't guess what they mean to me (and even then you might struggle exactly nailing it)
I know I'm not Japanese, but that's the style I've chosen for the leg piece and I'm sticking to it
That piece started after my Dad died and I know exactly what each part symbolises to me...and I don't care whether anyone else understands it or likes it anyway
I'm sure the OP isn't that offended by tattooed people really, and as has been said tattoos are not remotely linked to whether anyone is a good or bad person

This sums it up for me. I don't want a tattoo personally but I don't mind seeing quality ones on other people.
I agree totally. There's no way a general opinion expressed on an anonymous forum can be construed as a personal attack and I'm certain people with tattoos are just as nice and just as horrible as everyone else (me included).
I just think loads of tatts look daft.
I'm just in the process of designing one for my lower leg area.
Which artist do you go to?
I have recommendations for Creative Vandals on George St, Bish's near Cornmill, and the one that Abel Hernandez uses in town InkWorkz......
(I have one tattoo on my upper arm from Ronnie Stars about 25 years ago...that will probably need lasering and going over, the quality is still there, just the design I no longer like)

I've used Inkwerx previously, Jonny Welburn's run it for years, but last ones there were with Mat Lapping there and I liked his style best.
He left and went to set up Creative Vandals about 9 years ago (and took another artist with him - Andy, but I haven't used him)
I'm still going to Mat and doubt I'll change now
I'd pop in and discuss what you want before going for lasering as it may be faded enough to cover up

It's actually a couple of years since I had one and this time my daughters have paid for 4 hours for my 50th so I didn't like to ask
Give them a call (not my daughters!) and check the hourly rate
He hasn't charged me for designs (and all mine are bespoke after a consultation and me explaining what I'm trying to achieve, which I did today with him after emailing him)
If it helps I'm getting all round my leg done (sadly that's a long way!) probably about 8 inches deep and he reckons he will get the outline and dark shading done in the 4 hours and I'll probably have the same again for the colour. If I'm honest I'd guessed at about 10-12 hours in total, but like I said it's been a while

That's not a bad living, but a lot of competition I suppose and city centre premises overheads etc.

Jonny Welburn did three of mine in his kitchen in Anlaby in 1979, I had no idea he'd gone on to be a proper tattooist.
Saffrondale? (I was around when he was doing them there, although maybe a year or two later )
It was indeed on Saffrondale, he ran his tattoo gun off a train set transformer.
