Nah I was more a baseball bat and black widow kind of hooligan <laugh>

They sold black widows and slingshots... I'm surprised you can't remember this shop .... kids used to come out the pictures and gander at all the **** in it.

When I bought my sword I had to write a name and address in a book and that was that....I bet now you can't do that.... I wrote a fake name etc anyway.

Have you ever stood on a roof weilding a samurai sword in your boxers at 3am ? .. I'll level with you I felt fear because one didn't run away for a while.... I think he may not have seen where I was and then ****ed off when he realised where my voice was coming from.

Local NE coach turned up at my school and offered to run some classes for the PE Dept so thought I'd give it a try - turns out I wasn't too shabby

Made World Student Games squad in '92, then GB training squad from '94 - 2002.

Fenced at Club, Regional, National and International B level. Only missed out on A Grade Internationals, World and European Championships and Olympics.

****ed my knee up competing in France in 2013, so been out of action competitively since then, but still do some team comps for my club etc
Mental note to self. Don’t cross Death it could be fatal.

Given how good you are at fencing mate, any chance you can replace a couple of posts from my back garden as they are on their last legs?

Did fencers used to run their opponents through when it was invented?

That was duelling lol - fencing was basically developed as a way to practice.

However, the point on my épée is designed to only register a hit once it has been depressed sufficiently far and at correct pressure to draw blood if we were using sharps.

Have seen plenty blood spilled over the years, mainly due to broken blades, I could likely punch a broken blade through a car door to give you an idea

I have to say despite it having something to prevent being made in to a kebab on the end psychologically I think fear would be a problem for people for quite a while. I mean I like a bit of boxing and the instinct for people to look away is a massive obstacle, so I'm assuming that is similar?

So we have one guy who's pretty much a fencing expert - lets call him Zorro

To an extent, the mask helps obviously, but some people simply don't like being hit - it's a contact / combat sport so things happen - you have to accept it or don't bother

I can relate to that mate. Similar discipline to martial arts. All well and good hitting punch bags & focus pads, or kicking thin air to improve your technique, but you really need to know what it feels like to both make and take impact.

Even if the ultimate aim is to avoid conflict, if you do get stuck with no choice then you need to know what it's like to be hit and to defend/block, as well as how to attack.

Sometimes you get hurt in training and in competitions. All part of the learning.
